The YouTube channel ATIME’s show “CLUB INSPIRED DAY,” hosted by Aun Phuwanat, conducted an interview with Tu Piyawadee Maleenont. They discussed proving their love with Mavin Taweepol. Before marrying and having a child, Nong Miaomii, Miss Monlina Taweepol, their daughter, and Tu opened up about the challenges of motherhood, persevering through nine ICSI attempts, facing depression, and learning to understand herself, let go, and make the most of every moment with her child.
At one point, Aun Phuwanat directly asked about the surname, saying, “Maleenont is an important family name in the country, to the extent that even Vin himself said he wanted Nong Miaomii to use it.” Tu replied, “Yes, he always said maybe she should use that surname. He considered whether it might make life easier for her in his society.”
Aun then followed up, “In the end, it ended with you saying no. From our perspective, at that time, why did you feel that way?” Tu answered clearly, “According to Thai cultural tradition, I feel it’s normal to use the father’s surname. I’m not one to resist. Looking back, when I studied abroad, some siblings stayed on and didn’t want to return. But for me, since I had to return, why force it? If not today, then tomorrow — I just came back without complicating life. It’s the same here; it’s Thai culture and a long-standing custom.”
“I also feel that using Vin’s surname isn’t insignificant or anything negative. I just want... The reason I’ve always thought this is that although I may have more advantages than others, that doesn’t mean his family is inferior.”
“So I don’t see it as about 'Maleenont' or 'Taweepol.' I simply want my child to use and be proud of both father and mother, following tradition. It’s that simple; I don’t want complications.”
.
Additionally, Aun Phuwanat asked about proving success, noting that realistically, they could have skipped steps since Mavin was already working and the family was established. They could have settled down earlier or started in the middle, like buying a house. But why did they choose to follow the natural progression step by step?
Tu gave an interesting answer: “Feeling proud of myself is very important to me. So I decided I wouldn’t get married unless... Even now, all expenses are split between me and Vin. Believe it or not, we split the wedding costs, too. I’m very okay with splitting everything equally. Some say the woman pays for the engagement and wedding, the man for the celebration — no, we split everything evenly. I’m determined not to pay everything just to get married or to get this house.”
“If I did that, I would feel less valuable myself. Even if I said I’m willing and can afford it without any hardship, it would affect his self-worth. He would feel it himself. Especially since we plan to have children, I don’t want a moment where the child thinks, ‘Only Mom matters, not Dad, because Mom bought the house and gave the surname.’ If the child took my surname, everything would be ‘Mom, Mom, Mom.’ I want the child to be proud of both parents.”
