Thai Armys Stylish Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG Military Vehicles

Besides tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other military vehicles used in army operations, there are four-wheel, six-wheel, eight-wheel, or ten-wheel drive trucks capable of traversing any terrain and conditions to join or support combat, transport troops or weapons, and assist wounded soldiers. These vehicles have played vital roles in nearly every battlefield throughout the history of warfare...

Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG (Germany)
The Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG (Universal Motor Gerät) is a military personnel and cargo transport truck designed in 1946 (BE 2489) after World War II. The prototype was unveiled in 1948 (BE 2491). Originally, it was designed as a simple, versatile machine with permanent 4x4 all-wheel drive, suitable for agriculture, forestry, and various freight transport tasks.

There is no doubt that the engine’s torque power is highly useful for combat operations. The UNIMOG is more than just a military machine, although some models have abundant power. Mercedes-Benz’s UNIMOG design for military and government agencies has brought great success to the German automaker, evolving over 70 years. Today, the UNIMOG has grown in size and improved its 4x4 drivetrain similar to SUVs, with payload capacities from 1,250 to 7,500 kilograms. The 6x6 versions feature six-wheel drive for battlefield mobility. The UNIMOG’s performance suits both military and civilian use, making it popular with armed forces in over 30 countries worldwide.

Thai Army Procures Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG U4000
In 2020, the Army Ordnance Department announced the procurement of Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG U4000 trucks offered by Chance Inter Business Co., Ltd., the authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer in Thailand. The contract, valued at 196.8 million baht (approximately 6.2 million USD), covered 24 units of 1¼-ton trucks. This was an additional acquisition, as the Thai Army already operates over 2,500 UNIMOG vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG U4000 Field Kitchen Truck

The field kitchen truck is equipped with a full cooking setup to support field operations during extended missions or large training camps.

The older Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG U1100 L/29 military model remains popular, used to transport communication sets, antennas, and field communication equipment. Its structure is highly customizable.

Over the years, military-adapted versions of the UNIMOG have been developed, gradually increasing vehicle size. Each model is built for durability, strength, and excellent off-road capability. Its drivetrain performance and torque, combined with a wide wheelbase, provide stability when traversing forests and mountains. Load capacity and other variables ensure the UNIMOG meets military logistics needs. It also serves as a medical company vehicle, transporting supplies or troops, as well as other military equipment. Additionally, UNIMOGs are used as platforms for mounting light artillery.

The UNIMOG offers exceptional off-road driving capability and maintenance advantages, as parts are globally available. It has also been modified into armored vehicles for frontline forces in war zones.

The Unimog U4000 4x4 off-road military truck measures 6.01 meters long, 2.3 meters wide, and 2.6 meters high, with a maximum payload of 3 tons. It features a traditional chassis with the engine and cabin at the front, and a troop or cargo bed at the rear. The cabin can be extended to seat up to seven personnel, with optional foldable passenger seats. The dashboard includes a large instrument panel with an LCD display, center console, and an EPS gear lever.

The Unimog U4000 is available with short or long wheelbases. Its body can be fitted with box platforms or flatbeds mounted on a torsion-resistant subframe designed to prevent torque transfer to the upper structure when driving over rough terrain. The rear compartment can be equipped with center or side benches for 16 soldiers. Additional features include twist locks for container securing and pallet tie-down points.

Protection and Survivability Features of the Unimog U4000

The all-steel cabin provides high safety for troops and can be fitted with armor as required by the military. The cabin structure includes an underbody mine protection system and improved small arms bullet protection using composite panels and blast-resistant plates. Additional protective levels include resistance to level 4 bullets, 4b mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and explosively formed penetrators (EFPs).

The Electric Power Shift (EPS) system reduces driver workload during operations. In case of battlefield damage or electronic failure, the driver can use an emergency switch to hydraulically change gears and move the vehicle out of the line of fire.

Four-Cylinder Engine and BlueTec Exhaust System
The Unimog U4000 is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM 904 LA/OM 924 LA four-cylinder diesel engine (Euro 4), paired with a fully synchronized manual Mercedes-Benz gearbox and BlueTec diesel emission treatment to reduce NOx emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. The engine produces 177 horsepower with a top speed of 85.7 km/h. Its off-road agility is enhanced by portal axles and 4x4 drive. The axle tubes and differentials are positioned above the wheel centerline, increasing ground clearance compared to typical military trucks. The driver can lock the differentials electrically and pneumatically without using the clutch.

Low-pressure tires and coil spring suspension with telescopic shock absorbers improve off-road maneuverability. A dual-circuit braking system offers better control when driving on slopes. Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) is available as an option, allowing the driver to adjust tire pressure from the cabin. CTIS enhances traction on various surfaces, especially when heavily loaded.

The Unimog U4000 can climb slopes up to 100% gradient and safely ford water up to 1.2 meters deep. It is transportable by aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and C-160 Transall.
