A major tragedy that not only shocked Thai society but also impacted people worldwide occurred on 6 Oct 2022 at the Nong Bua Lamphu Subdistrict Administrative Organization daycare center. The perpetrator, former police sergeant major Panya Khamrab, armed with a gun and a knife, attacked children and staff during their nap time, then fled while hitting and shooting civilians along the way. Upon reaching his home, he fatally shot his wife and child before taking his own life. The attack resulted in 36 deaths, including 24 young children.
On 11 Feb 2026 around 3:00 p.m., Thung Lung Police Station received reports of an 18-year-old man exhibiting erratic behavior. Police intervened, but the man attacked officers and local officials with a knife, then seized a police rifle, fled on a motorcycle, and stormed into Phatong Prathankiriwat School in Phatong Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province.
The assailant shot the school principal, injuring him, and took staff and students hostage. Police negotiated and eventually apprehended the suspect. Two students were wounded, and the principal later died at the hospital due to his injuries.
The latest incident occurred on 7 Aug 2026 at Debsirin Nonthaburi School. Around 10:00 a.m., authorities received reports of a shooting inside the school, prompting an immediate response to control the situation and evacuate people.
As of 11:00 a.m., reports indicated the shooter was a Grade 9 student who fired at teachers and students before taking his own life. Preliminary reports confirm at least 7 dead and 15 injured, with 2 in critical condition.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul ordered the most urgent care for the injured and stated: “This is very bad news, the incident is deeply troubling.”
The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to the victims' families, saying he was deeply saddened and sympathized, questioning how such an event could happen in our country. He reiterated the government's policy against issuing or renewing firearm possession licenses.
