The Songkran festival is approaching. Songkran is arriving steadily this year. It is a festival many look forward to, but they face a cost-of-living crisis. Energy prices, fuel, and consumer goods have continuously risen, disrupting many people’s travel plans and holiday spending.
Recently, “A Chaiya” or “Chaiya Mitchai,” the famous likay performer, shared his thoughts on this situation. He admitted feeling great sympathy for the public, as the problems have broad effects, especially during a festival that should be a time of happiness for everyone.
He revealed that many intend to travel home, but given the current economic conditions, increased expenses may cause serious reconsideration. He advised everyone to try to adapt—for example, instead of dining out as planned, they might choose to buy food to eat at home to reduce costs.
Additionally, for those with high expenses who cannot travel home, he encouraged maintaining regular contact with family. At minimum, phone calls can ease longing and provide mutual encouragement.
Meanwhile, “A Chaiya” also disclosed the direct impact on himself. He originally planned to perform likay in Phichit province, but after meeting with his team, they had to cancel the performance because they could no longer bear the rising costs and expenses. The event organizer understood the situation well.
He also discussed preparations in case energy usage control measures are implemented, such as a curfew. He sees the most vulnerable groups as those working in the entertainment industry and nighttime workers, who could be heavily affected by such measures.
