Prepare to dive into a toxic love epic with five character posters from the film "The Miracle of Wanthong" (In The Name of Love), the debut production from Black Dragon Entertainment. The film assembles well-known actors to rewrite the history of "Nang Wanthong," starring Ink Waruntorn Paonil, Mark Prin Suparat, and
Gulf Kanawut Traipipattanapong, joined by Primmy Wipawi Phatsanasiri and Fei Pat Ekasakul. It is scheduled to premiere on 3 September in cinemas. The released posters showcase the beauty of the characters against the backdrop of mural paintings from Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan, which tell the love story of Wanthong, Khun Phaen, and Khun Chang. Each of the five posters also reveals each character’s unique definition of "true love."
"The Miracle of Wanthong" is produced by Julian Chong, CEO of Black Dragon Entertainment, who has continuously produced acclaimed films and series such as Snowpiercer and The Admiral: Roaring Currents. He serves as producer alongside director Muk Piyakan Butprasert, known for "Long Live Love!" Director Muk Piyakan spoke about casting for the film: "We saw paintings at Wat Pa Lelai Worawihan by artist Muang Singh Janchaai. Seeing those, I thought of Ink Waruntorn and invited him to audition. He performed an important execution scene with a monologue that perfectly matched our vision. I was surprised he could cry on his first take. We let him act naturally without a finalized script, believing the script chooses the actor as much as the actor fits the script."
"For the roles of Khun Phaen and Khun Chang, we intentionally created very different characters. Khun Phaen is strong and traditionally masculine, while Khun Chang is gentle, a close friend of Wanthong who understands women. Bringing these two together highlights their distinct characters. When we contacted Mark to play Khun Phaen, we wanted a very Thai man, which is rare nowadays. I had seen his interview where he read Phet Phra Uma and showed interest in Thai literature, so we reached out and sent the script. Ultimately, he said yes. Gulf plays Khun Chang; he’s naturally talented, even without trying. His audition reactions made our hearts race. Gulf is interesting because he wants to challenge himself by auditioning for this role."
"Khun Phaen is a difficult period role to find someone fully committed to. Mark was very dedicated and auditioned for about four hours," Muk Piyakan said.
The director added that for the role of Sai Thong, they wanted to give the character a unique dimension with a certain sexuality reflecting the fanciful view of male writers of that era. They sought a woman with strong sex appeal, which led to casting Primmy. Fei plays Jan Son, whose role adds comedic spice. They developed the character collaboratively, interpreting him as a progressive person out of his time—doing well in his own way despite being born in the Ayutthaya era.
Rewriting the love fate of Nang Wanthong, the film marks a new historic chapter through the vision of director Long Live Love and producer of Snowpiercer. "The Miracle of Wanthong" premieres in cinemas on 3 September.
