Seeking Rising Stars on the Oval Stage to Perform with World-Class Artists

The Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) 2026, organized by Mahidol University's College of Music, marks a major step in advancing the Thai jazz scene by launching a campaign to select a single Big Band from the Oval Stage to earn the right to perform on the Main Stage alongside world-class artists in 2027.

Project Manager of TIJC, Professor Nopadol Thirathornadol, revealed that this year is the most special yet for the Oval Stage because it involves a selection process to find the most outstanding Big Band. Performances by all bands will be recorded in audio and video for expert judges to choose the single most exceptional band, which will earn the privilege to "Level Up" and showcase their talent on the Main Stage the following year.

"It must be acknowledged that in TIJC's early years, this space was designed as a relaxing, informal area for knowledge exchange. It was a stage that initially attracted little interest from local bands, so we invited groups from around Bangkok to perform, with only two or three bands playing per day. However, driven by the musicians' desire for a platform to express themselves and communicate with fellow musicians in a shared language, exchanging experiences to develop their craft, the stage grew rapidly. Beyond many bands composing their own music, this venue has now gained overwhelming interest. This year, nearly 80 bands from across Thailand and abroad have showcased their potential, prompting us to expand to the Cat Stage. This proves that the Oval Stage is not just a music venue but the vital heart creating the greatest impact on the jazz musician community."

For 2026, the TIJC Project Manager highlighted a key feature for audiences on the Oval Stage: a gathering of over 20 top Big Bands from across the country and abroad competing in a "non-stop" format from morning until evening, amid a lively atmosphere created by jazz enthusiasts coming together.

"I assure you this year is even more intense because it is the first year a Big Band will be selected as The Only One. It's time for a band from the Oval Stage to earn the right to perform alongside world-class artists on the Main Stage. Audiences will witness the combined potential of Thailand's jazz bands, who have pushed each other forward. I urge all musicians performing this year to prepare thoroughly and give their best to seize the opportunity to become the new wave of jazz at TIJC," said Professor Nopadol about this year's significant change.

Music lovers are invited to watch and cheer for their favorite bands from January 23-25, 2026 at the Oval Stage, College of Music, Mahidol University, with free admission throughout the three days.
