The story of Der Dok Sadao has been widely discussed after Pu Kanokwan came forward to reveal a story she had kept inside, which many had previously misunderstood. Pu disclosed that she has separated from Der after discovering he had been hiding a double life for over 29 years, and encountered another woman who spoke to her directly, saying, “I’m sorry for what happened before. No hard feelings now, we’re all old.” This deeply hurt Pu.
Recently, a close friend of Der Dok Sadao posted on Facebook to share another perspective as a longtime friend who studied with Der since childhood and has kept in contact. He said,
“I have been classmates with Der since childhood and stayed in touch. We both grew up to become artists, though in different fields. As far as I know, before Der was with you, Pu, he had a first wife before he became famous, with one daughter and one son, and they have long since separated.
I wonder who the ‘hidden wife for 29 years’ Pu mentioned is—could it be this former wife? If he truly hid her for that long, why didn’t friends know? (It might be true but friends weren’t aware because he was very secretive.) The issue is that one side is speaking out while the other cannot. This doesn’t help Der, but fairness should be given. The private matters of two people are not for us to deeply judge.
Pu said she knew for a long time. If Pu separated before Der became seriously ill, society would likely not see her as at fault. Personally, I don’t blame her, as Pu probably has her own reasons she prefers not to share. Society might not understand, but I do.”
