Surprise Proposal: Director Bas Natthawut Proposes to Girlfriend and Host on Stage

It was a total surprise for everyone at the event when the energetic young director Bas Natthawut the renowned director of the film “Gohan.. Heart Goes Home” knelt down to surprise and propose to his girlfriend Praew Hassaya Isariyasereekul who was serving as the event host, asking for her hand in marriage after they had been together for over 13 years, in a warm atmosphere witnessed by hundreds at the event.

After the event, Bas Natthawut and Praew gave interviews to the media, saying that

Bas: “I told her father, urgently.”

Praew: “I really had no idea. I was shocked. There was no hint or coordination at all.”

Had you planned this for a long time?

Bas: “I hadn’t really told her yet. Actually, I had been planning for a while. I thought I’d propose after the film’s release. The reason for asking was because making this film was tough and full of challenges. But one thing I’m very thankful for, as I said on stage, is that when I go home, she’s like a warm and good home that helps me keep fighting. This film is mine, but it’s also her film.”

How did you feel hearing that?

Praew: “He doesn’t usually say things like that, so I was a bit confused. Before he knelt down, I didn’t suspect anything at all. When I’m working, I focus on the script, but thinking back, the script was with Bas once, then with Worran, then back to Bas again. Usually, the script goes from Bas to Worran and then it’s finished. Just now, I thought, okay, never mind. But now thinking about it, I wonder why it went back.”

Did you think he tricked you into hosting the event?

Bas: “No trick. She came because of her skills. Anyway, someone had to be hired.”

Praew: “So he hired me himself. I usually like wearing white clothes, but these days I can’t do my nails because I’m filming a period drama.”

During the kneeling moment, you seemed to not quite believe it?

Bas: “I thought she might have knee pain.”

Praew: “I never imagined how it would be, but when it really happened, everything just disappeared for a moment. My mind wasn’t clear, then after about three seconds I realized, is this really happening? On stage, I even said, is this real? Because I was shocked. As I said, Bas isn’t usually like this, but I replied to him that yes, it is.”

Can you picture that moment just now?

Praew: “Honestly, there wasn’t any plan. I wasn’t thinking about marriage, but I was happy. I didn’t expect something like this. I was just there to work and support him, not thinking about anything else.”

Bas: “I didn’t think either. At first, when I talked to Worran, I thought it would be a small thank-you event for the crew. But as the day approached, I realized the event’s format, and I couldn’t back out anymore. I had to go forward.”

How did you two first meet?

Praew: “If I tell the truth, it’s been a long time. I interviewed Bas during a countdown event in 2012 and had chances to interview him many times after. We kept running into each other, and he’s been a brother figure in my life for 12 to 13 years. I’ve seen him all along.”

“To be honest, it was only around the middle of last year that we started officially dating. We hadn’t talked about a relationship before that. I thought I knew him as a brother. I remember telling him, if this time we don’t end up together, that’s okay. We’ve been siblings for 13 years, and I can go back to being your sister. I told him this.”

Bas: “So, should I go back?”

Praew: “No, I won’t.”

Bas, how do you feel that this woman has been in your life for 13 years?

Bas: “Saying she’s been in my life sounds too serious. We’ve known each other all along unintentionally, but about a year ago, I felt I didn’t want to waste any more time.”

What made you feel it was time?

Bas: “Waiting longer didn’t seem right. I’m confident with her now. As we work and get older, ambition isn’t as important as the love between us and the people around us.”

What made you feel she is the one?

Bas: “I can’t really explain. It’s a mix of feelings. If I tried to explain and one day she wasn’t that person, I might stop feeling that way. So it’s because of who she is.”

Then, Praew, why did you say yes?

Praew: “It’s similar. I feel like home. He’s mature. Maybe it’s also me. If we had dated 10 years ago, we might have broken up, but now it’s the right time and maturity. We complement each other’s shortcomings. I can take care of his health, and he brings maturity to me. I just called my father, and he said to go ahead.”

What are your plans now?

Bas: “We still have a lot to discuss. I want this step to be stable. It depends on our work responsibilities.”

How did you find out her ring size?

Bas: “One of Praew’s close friends helped. They are very close and she often wears rings, so I asked for help.”

Praew: “I just realized because I used to sell rings, so talking about rings felt very normal, no suspicion at all. Even at that moment, I was completely clueless.”

Having made many films, do you have an image of what your wedding day will be like?

Bas: “No, never. I never thought I would do something like that, I swear. But being with her, it feels possible and stable. I’ve never felt like this before. I don’t know if it’s like a scene from a film, but I hope it becomes my real life.”
