This is a touching story between a father and son. Mix Pethai Wongkamhla and his father, the superstar comedian Mum Jokmok opened up on the program "Tee Tai Krua" about a past conflict where they didn't speak for a full 4 years due to differing views on further education.
Mix said that at that age, he hadn’t considered the bigger picture because he was only 20 and wanted to study film. His father’s perspective was, "Why study it? Since I’m already making films, you can learn directly from me."
Mum explained that his eldest daughter M was already studying film, so why study the same thing again? He wanted Mix to study marketing, economics, law, or something other than film.
In the end, Mix studied general communication because at that time he lacked the maturity or mindset he has now and couldn’t see clearly. They barely spoke then; he tried to avoid seeing his father because he wanted to understand why his father opposed studying film, but his father never explained.
Mum said he didn’t explain because if Mix didn’t understand, he might as well not live properly. Mum left home at 17 and lived alone, thinking his parents didn’t love him. Only later did he realize they loved him deeply, wanting him to find a job and earn money to buy food. Choosing not to explain to his son led to mutual silence and a quiet household.
He added that his eldest daughter M was similar—after returning from abroad, she partied. He told her once, “Your life is just a movie trailer; it won’t get to the main story unless you stop partying.” That was all he said.
Regarding Mix, he didn’t want to explain either. At 17, 18, or 19, when he himself was that age, he had already figured things out. At 18, he was supporting his wife by stocking up on food. When she was pregnant with M at 19, he bought canned fish to prepare for uncertain work days. If the canned fish ran out, he’d eat it with fish sauce. Now that Mix is over 30, he’s starting to understand and appreciate the value of money.
When asked what made Mix understand his father and start talking again, Mix said it was their long-time driver who also drove him. The driver wondered why they didn’t talk and told his father. His father said, “If one day he doesn’t make films or do anything, he still has a degree to work in an office.” Mix realized his father had a broad perspective and felt bad for not talking for 4 years, as he hadn’t understood his father’s intentions at that time.
Mum said no matter how much he explained, Mix wouldn’t understand; he wanted Mix to realize it himself. “I’m a tough person; that’s just how I am.” Later, Mix began to realize this, started overseeing work himself, and took on producer roles to see the overall picture.
