Many people became very concerned when Kan Wipakorn the wife of Sek Loso shared an image of her husband's arm covered with a rash and clear blisters. Since he had never experienced such symptoms before, she was quite worried and posted on social media asking if it was shingles, and mentioned that the prison had been helping to care for him.
“Friends, please help answer. Yesterday there was a rash without blisters; today clear blisters appeared. I want to know what this is, and if it’s dangerous. Is it shingles or herpes? If anyone knows, please tell me. Thank you.”
Sek Loso’s arm—neither he nor I have ever had anything like this before, so I am very worried. He developed it yesterday, and today is the second day. We had someone buy medication and ointment, and saline to clean and dress the wounds. The prison staff have also been caring for him and provided medicine. Sek is stubborn and doesn’t usually take good care of his health. Yesterday, I had to scold and insist on health care, but I don’t know what else to do.”
Fans following the story responded in large numbers, saying these symptoms are definitely shingles. They explained that the illness usually occurs when the body is weak or the immune system is low, and advised seeking medical attention promptly, as delayed treatment may cause burning nerve pain.
Meanwhile, Dr. Samathi Nichanont, a member of the Dermatological Association of Thailand, commented with detailed information and recommended antiviral medication, stating that these symptoms could likely be "shingles." He advised taking antiviral drugs within 48-72 hours after the blisters appear to speed healing and reduce the chance of chronic nerve pain.
“Sek, are you experiencing severe burning or pain? You may have shingles. Please consult the doctors and nurses caring for you. You might need to start antiviral medication such as Acyclovir 800 mg, five times a day every 4 hours (6:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m.) or Valacyclovir 500 mg, two tablets three times a day.
(Either medication is fine; Valacyclovir is more effective and requires fewer doses, but Acyclovir is more readily available at pharmacies.) It is important to start taking the medication within 48-72 hours after the blisters appear, continuing for 7-10 days. Drink plenty of water to help the wounds heal faster and to prevent post-shingles nerve pain, which can be very severe and last for months.
If the pain is intense, you can take pain relievers like Paracetamol or Ibuprofen (for severe pain), along with nerve pain medication such as Gabapentin 300 mg twice daily (morning and evening), which can help reduce pain. Please get plenty of rest. I am thinking of you, Sek.”
