Netizens erupted in criticism when the young singer Thong Thikhamphon Vetchthaisong or ILLSLICK blurred the face of Pan Rakmao, an influencer and TikTok star popular with youth, in the music video for the hit song "One AM at the City Moat," which has surpassed 119 million views.
Comments fiercely condemned ILLSLICK, including remarks like: "The issue is, Pan Rakmao’s actions don’t even make up a quarter of the song owner's misdeeds," "Why blur her face? If that’s the case, might as well delete the song—clearly just waiting for views and money," "Some people listen because of Pan; doing this is really petty, haha," and "Between blurring Pan Rakmao’s face or ILL’s, I’d choose to blur ILL’s face," among others.
The blurring of Pan Rakmao’s face in this music video led many to connect it to her recent heated controversies, including dropping out of medical studies, taking on clinic endorsement jobs, and being linked to a dispute with Pengpin, a fellow medical student who posted an educational video opposing cosmetic needle injections.
However, the video sparked controversy, with many speculating Pengpin was indirectly criticizing Pan Rakmao. Some praised Pengpin for providing medical knowledge fitting for a medical student, contrasting with Pan, who dropped out to review clinics.
Additionally, Pan’s makeup artist commented, "Different minds think differently; whoever wants to study, study; whoever wants to work, work; whoever wants to get injections, let them. Just focus on surviving yourself." Also, Pan’s manager was seen commenting, "Who are you talking about? Just name names. No need to be vague about this or that person. It’s ridiculous."
After the controversy, Pengpin posted a clarification video, affirming she did not intend to attack or refer to anyone specifically. She emphasized everyone has rights over their own bodies and she only wishes for everyone to be healthier through exercise and good nutrition. She apologized if anyone was affected by the controversy.
As for whether ILLSLICK’s decision to blur Pan Rakmao’s face was truly due to this controversy, we will have to wait for his explanation.
