Celebrity and well-known host Ko Teerasak has voiced the perspective of those earning a living in the digital age. “Ko Teerasak Pancharriya” Besides his entertainment career, he is now seriously involved as a live-stream seller and online business owner. Recently, he shared his views on the current e-commerce system and advocated for Thailand to create its own online shopping platform to keep money circulating domestically.
As a live-stream seller and online merchant, how would you feel if Thailand had its own online selling platform in the future?
“Once a platform gains market traction and becomes popular, they raise prices. It’s a cycle and a commercial mechanism. The government and all sectors need to help because ordinary people’s efforts are like using a small stick to move a big log. Still, it’s necessary because we want something of our own so money can flow back into our country. Sometimes, after we finish our work, the money goes straight back overseas. We want the economy to circulate and money to stay with Thai people.”
“However, we still rely on the government because who dislikes cheap goods? Even if they’re not Thai products, we want them because they’re affordable. But there are many issues, including scams—very cheap items turn out to be counterfeit, or large packages contain tiny items, or products arrive spoiled and come with no warranty. Sellers often allow inspection and returns, which helps prevent Thai people from being cheated.”
“If there were a good Thai online platform with support, that would be great. For example, in China, they don’t use LINE; they use their own app WeChat. In South Korea, they use their own applications. Having a Thai app would be beneficial and allow us to do more than just spend money—it would be truly ours.”
“It would be great to have a Thai app because many people say they work hard selling products but barely earn a few satangs (small fractions of a baht), which isn’t sustainable.”
