The comedy industry mourns once again with news of the passing of Oleang Chernyim, a 63-year-old male comedian who died on the morning of 25 Aug 2026 from emphysema after months of treatment. Thairath Entertainment revisits the career of this beloved comedian.
Regarding "Oleang Chernyim", his real name was Sompong Kraithirangkul. Known by the nickname "Oleang," he was born on 11 Aug 1963. He entered the entertainment industry working with the famous comedy troupe Ped Chernyim around 1997, then joined the Tuarae Chernyim troupe in 2000-2001.
Afterward, Oleang became a member of the TV show "Sapa Joke," a social satire and political parody program in 2006, gaining wider recognition among TV audiences who called him "Oleang Sapa Joke."
He later acted in the show "Kon Hua Mor," which dramatized legal scenarios with lawyers and comedians making complex laws easier to understand. Oleang performed alongside Ae Chernyim, creating the memorable image known as "Oleang Kon Hua Mor."
Regarding his acting work, Oleang Chernyim appeared in the 2017 film "Som Phak Sian" and the TV drama "Sin Lai So" on Channel One 31.
In 2021, Oleang shared on the "Kui Zap Show" that comedy work was traditionally done in troupes. If a gig paid around 30,000-50,000 baht, the money would be divided among many troupe members, not just one.
When work was steady, he could cover expenses, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was severely impacted with almost no work for nearly two years. Savings were used up to pay household costs, including university fees for his only daughter, Nong Cafe, who was in her final year then.
Later, a senior figure helped redeem his nearly paid-off house, transferring ownership temporarily before Oleang repaid 4,500 baht monthly until the full 800,000 baht price was covered and ownership returned to him. Other assets were sold to support the family.
In his later years, Oleang suffered illness starting in 2016, experiencing chest tightness and shortness of breath while working in Surat Thani province. He was rushed to an emergency room in Chumphon Hospital where doctors provided oxygen and bronchodilators, improving his condition so he could continue traveling.
In 2021, Oleang revealed he had long suffered from asthma, limiting his physical activity. He always carried medication and a nebulizer and had been seriously ill enough to require ICU care.
In Nov 2025, Oleang was hospitalized for a worsening emphysema condition requiring a tracheostomy and ventilator support. He stayed in treatment nearly a month. In May 2026, he was admitted to Kasemrad Rattanathibet Hospital for lung infection, breathing difficulty, and weakness.
On the morning of 25 Aug 2026, Oleang Chernyim passed away peacefully at Kasemrad Rattanathibet Hospital at age 63 after months of treatment. Thairath Entertainment expresses condolences once again.
