The scandal shaking the monastic community has been widely discussed nationwide, concerning the arrest of "Thid Choti" the former abbot of Phutthaisawan Temple in Ayutthaya province, and "Sika Ae" his close female associate, involved in embezzlement of temple funds and the discovery of over 200 million baht in cash and gold hidden in the monk's quarters, as well as allegations of adultery, sparking intense social media criticism.
Recently, Prairie Phaiwan Wannabut posted a brief but painfully poignant message that resonated with social media users, writing, “The maker of sacred amulets has 1,000 baht worth of gold bars and over 130 million baht in cash in his quarters, while those who buy and worship them remain just as poor. The amulet’s name is ‘Above Fortune,’ yet its creator cannot escape the law of karma.”
Many followers commented, such as: “Those who bought the amulets still eat simple fried egg rice as usual,” “You will be wealthy in the next life; I am rich this life,” “There’s another temple near Ayutthaya where cash is kept in the monk’s quarters, and the female devotees count money all day long, seeking someone to open bank accounts—these women are called lay caretakers, each wanting to be the monk’s favorite, truly cheeky,” “From now on, remember: no amulet can help us except ourselves,” and “Some buyers even borrow money to worship.”
