It is another sad news for the Thai entertainment industry following the loss of an important figure in Thai cinema. “Piek Poster” or “Sombunsuk Niyomsiri” A National Artist in Performing Arts (Film and Television) in 2015, he passed away peacefully from old age on 24 Sep 2026 at 13:15 GMT+7, at the age of 93, according to the family’s announcement.
Piek Poster was born on 18 Oct 1932 in Chiang Mai province. He passed away just 24 days before his 94th birthday, closing the chapter on a life marked by lasting contributions to Thai cinema over many decades.
Piek Poster was formerly a movie billboard painter before making his mark as a film director. He directed more than 28 Thai films, especially in the early years, often using single-syllable titles that became his trademark, with notable works like Tone and Choo.
His later famous works include Wai Aluan, a teenage romance film starring newcomers Phairoj Sangwaributr and Lalana Sulawan. It broke the mold for films of that era and earned significant box office returns, leading to sequels Rak Ut Lud and Chuen Chul Mun. Both Phairoj and Lalana became overnight stars.
Piek Poster dedicated 26 years to directing films. His last film, Bin Laek, was released in 1995. Afterward, he returned to live a nature-centered life in his home among the hills of Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima province.
In 2011, Piek Poster appeared in the film Top Secret Wai Run Pan Lan playing Uncle Tueang, winning the Best Supporting Actor award from the Entertainment Critics Club.
