Nam Joo Hyuk, No Yoon Seo, and Jo Seung Woo Step into the Spirit World in Series The East Palace

Netflix has released the trailer and poster for "The East Palace," a new Korean historical mystery series set within the royal palace and the spirit world known as the realm of "Gwi." Starring Nam Joo Hyuk, No Yoon Seo, and Jo Seung Woo, the series follows a wandering spirit exorcist, a palace maid, and a king bound by a blood curse that has haunted the palace for 30 years. It will be available for streaming worldwide on Netflix starting 17 July 2024 GMT+7.

The story is told through the character "Gu Cheon" (played by Nam Joo Hyuk), a man who can travel between the human world and the realm of "Gwi." Summoned to the palace by the king’s command (played by Jo Seung Woo), he must work with "Saenggang" (played by No Yoon Seo), a palace maid with the unique ability to hear spirits, to investigate the source of a deadly curse deeply rooted in the East Palace, the residence of generations of crown princes. As they secretly cross the boundary between life and death under the king’s orders, they gradually uncover terrifying truths hidden in the royal family’s past.

This grand series is a major collaboration between director Choi Jung Kyu, known for The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody, and screenwriters Kwon So Ra and Seo Jae Won from Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest. This guarantees a powerful supernatural world and an intriguing palace mystery.

The main trailer immerses viewers in the series’ eerie atmosphere. Despite the palace’s beautiful scenery, it is shrouded in oppressive silence. The whispers of malevolent spirits vow to wipe out the royal bloodline. Realizing that the tragedy from 30 years ago is about to recur, the king summons Gu Cheon to the palace and places Saenggang by his side to watch closely. Their secret mission begins as they travel between the human world and the realm of "Gwi." Each confrontation with hostile spirits gradually reveals grudges and sins buried beneath the royal throne. As these truths emerge, the once peaceful palace falls under the sway of darkness and uncontrollable chaos.

The released main poster shows Gu Cheon and Saenggang united under the king’s command. Gu Cheon is roughly bound with ropes, standing in a pool glowing with blood-red light from the realm of "Gwi," while Saenggang pulls hard on the ropes. The poster hints at their collaboration to expose hidden secrets within the palace and confront spirits that lurk just across the overlapping realm.

Fans eagerly await the chemistry and interplay between Nam Joo Hyuk, No Yoon Seo, and Jo Seung Woo, all known for their dedication and depth in acting. Director Choi Jung Kyu said, “From the first time I saw Nam Joo Hyuk, I was confident he was the one to step into the realm of 'Gwi' and face fate as his character does. He is the lead of 'The East Palace,' and I feel he is fully committed to this role and highly responsible.”

Director Choi Jung Kyu also praised No Yoon Seo, saying, “Every time I watched her past works, I felt she stood out distinctly. I’m confident her natural charm is her strength and makes her perfect for the role of Saenggang. Working with her, I saw she is truly a brave actor. I was impressed by how she carved her own path through straightforward and emotionally genuine performances.”

Speaking about reuniting with Jo Seung Woo, the director added, “Since our first collaboration long ago, I’ve dreamed of working with Jo Seung Woo again, and 'The East Palace' has made that dream come true. He pays great attention to every detail in shaping his character. Once filming starts, all that preparation translates into a tremendously powerful performance. Seeing that firsthand gave me a profound sense of release and fulfillment.”
