The series "Phap Luang Taay" tells the story of a child's disappearance in a small community in Chiang Khan district. This event reignites the villagers' fear of repeating a shocking case from over a decade ago: the 'Phi Pong' legend. Fear and suspicion spread throughout the village.
Eventually, the villagers firmly believe that "Narong" (played by Ah Nu Surasak Chaiyot) — an elderly man suffering from dementia — is responsible. His strange behavior makes him a suspect amidst frightening rumors spreading widely.
But for "Wann" (Taew Natapohn), the eldest daughter, and "Wat" (August Wachirawit Paisankulwong), her younger brother and doctor, they believe their father is simply a dementia patient needing care, not the Phi Pong ghost or the person behind the child disappearance rumors.
Wann pursues the truth to clear her father's name herself. This leads her to "Pete" (Jes Jespipat Tilapornphat), a young, determined police officer newly transferred from Bangkok, who is in charge of the child disappearance case. He trusts scientific evidence and what can be seen rather than rumors or unseen claims.
However, the more Wann investigates, the less certain she becomes about what she sees and believes, as her father's eyes she has known all her life start to change. Her mother "Phannee" (played by Tom Siranee Yankittikan) and "Uncle Sak" (played by Boombim Samton), her mother's brother and the village shaman, also seem to be hiding something. She begins to question those around her and loved ones, realizing that everyone in this house might no longer be the people she once knew.
While the truth about her father remains unclear and precarious, her own family life is collapsing. Her husband "Yot" (played by Te Satthawat Sethakorn) files for divorce and tries to gain full custody of their son, threatening to tear apart both her family of origin and the one she has built.
"Phap Luang Taay," directed by "U Chayan Laoyottrakul," who previously created the acclaimed horror series "Angkarn Khlumpong: Extreme – The Distorted Family," returns with a thrilling mystery series that weaves family relationships inspired by real dementia cases and the local Northeast Thai belief in the Phi Pong ghost.
He shared the inspiration behind the series: "I heard stories from crew members whose fathers suffered from dementia, and by the time it was noticed, it was too late, leading to frightening events like forgetting how to swallow or even harming loved ones. This made me wonder how we would feel if the person we love became a stranger we've never known."
"Upon further study, I found that the Thai folk belief of Phi Pong has some symbolic links to this illness. Sometimes, we cannot tell if the person before us is ill or something else unknown. I see the blurring between these two beliefs as the most interesting point to present, because in reality, we may never truly know where that line lies."
The series also stars skilled actors like Nong Tham Noraphat Nakadamrongchai and Te Satthawat Sethakorn, who bring depth to the mysteries hidden in every corner of this household.
