Netflix releases the first images from the series "Plerng Phra Nang" reinterpreted by the creators of "Suebsandan," presenting a new legendary chapter unlike before. It breaks familiar impressions through storytelling from fresh perspectives and flavors, uncovering the triggers and cunning tactics of the throne battle fought with intrigue, love, and vengeance.
The Netflix version of Plerng Phra Nang takes viewers to the city of Thip, ruled by the Thipyawong dynasty for over 300 years until the throne passed to Queen Tawanthip (played by Pancake Khemanit Jamikorn), known as the “Evil Queen,” who brutally suppressed the provinces. She was King Phuka (played by Tuck Napatsaran Mitthiroroj) overthrown, who then established the Phu Kha Luang dynasty, sparing the descendants of Thipyawong. He ruled with kindness, restoring peace and prosperity.
Eighteen years later, Buraphakam (played by Boy Pakorn Chatborirak), eldest son of Queen Tawanthip, launched a bloody rebellion and mercilessly killed King Phuka before his courtiers, ending an era of peace. Anantip (played by Baifern Pimchanok Luevisetpaiboon), the sole bloodline of King Phuka, lost everything and was exiled.
This disgrace transformed her from a compassionate princess into a scheming woman determined to restore the honor of the Phu Kha Luang dynasty. However, her path back to the throne is filled with betrayal and conspiracies within the royal court, including with Thipyawong heir Sekkhornthewi (played by Yada Narilaya Kulmongkolpetch), a former close friend turned rival, and Muang Khum (played by Mark Prin Supharat), her lover and final refuge, as well as Tongnual (played by Amanda Obdam), a princess from the city of Meed who uses charm and wealth to seize power. Repeatedly stripped of justice, Anantip lets darkness consume her, igniting a vengeance ready to burn everything to reclaim the throne.
The Netflix series Plerng Phra Nang is newly interpreted by director Siwarot Kongsakul and Kantana Motion Pictures, returning to collaborate with Netflix after the hit series "Suebsandan."
Siwarot Kongsakul explained his intent to portray Plerng Phra Nang from a new perspective: “I had never watched previous versions. My work began by exploring what energy the original script conveyed, then I infused my feelings into it. After reading the script, I found it excellent—engaging, nuanced, and intriguing. The story is driven by the characters' emotions, revealing life events and family relationships.
Centered on the throne struggle, I immersed myself in the tears, laughter, and screams of every character. Sometimes, the script seemed to teach me about emotions. I aimed to preserve the core and heart of the story while adding new details—deepening the characters' dimensions and life arcs so audiences can understand each character’s journey and motivations in their battlegrounds, creating a spicy yet multi-layered and sophisticated narrative.”
The Netflix version of Plerng Phra Nang tells a tale of vengeance leading to power struggles through characters driven by desires, motives, and grudges. Each character is portrayed with complex human dimensions, allowing viewers insight into their thoughts, wounds, and driving forces behind revenge. The intense story is brought to life by skilled actors who contributed to character interpretation and design to best express each role’s story and identity.
Regarding "Baifern Pimchanok Luevisetpaiboon" she shared her preparation for playing “Anantip”: “Anantip faces extreme turning points and intense shocks repeatedly. I worked hard on understanding the role, exploring new facets I had never played, and participated in additional workshops. I discussed with director Karn (Siwarot Kongsakul) about the character’s direction because I wanted to portray all sides of Anantip. Viewers might have seen her as a strong, capable woman, but I want them to see she is also just a woman—lonely and a girl hurt by loss before entering the throne battle, understanding why Anantip must fight.”
Yada Narilaya Kulmongkolpetch described her character “Sekkhornthewi”: “Sekkhornthewi is gentle, kind-hearted, and compassionate, raised with all privileges. But deep down, she is stubborn and holds firmly to her beliefs and traditions. I did extensive work with my acting coach and workshops with the cast, discovering many unexpected facets of Sekkhornthewi. I incorporated these feelings to reinterpret her, creating a character different from what audiences expect—strong, resolute, and self-assured.”
Regarding Pancake Khemanit Jamikorn she revealed about Queen “Tawanthip,” a new character enriching the series’ storyline: “Introducing Tawanthip lets viewers explore the reasons behind destruction, chaos, and war. Her story is woven throughout the series. I think Tawanthip is a fascinating character and a new story I am eager to share, revealing her identity and the power she holds above all. She embodies a beauty with violence, yet has many layers to discover.”
The production team devoted themselves to designing the series’ entire world anew, conveying Plerng Phra Nang’s fantasy realistically. They created a map outlining each city’s background—its location, lifestyle, people’s temperament, and unique history. Thus, costumes differ by city to clearly reflect each character’s identity and origins.
Ploy Rattanarat Uataveekul a costume designer stated, “Given our aim to incorporate Southeast Asian elements in the design, costume creation began there to highlight each city’s or tribe’s uniqueness. Combined with fantasy, it doesn’t reference any single country but imaginatively blends Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, drawing out the distinctiveness and diversity of each nation in the series’ costumes.”
Moreover, set design in Plerng Phra Nang was crafted to tell its own story, from the newly created throne hall of Thip city reflecting the story’s mood, to the throne design expressing perspectives of both the ruler and the subjects under power. The series also features many extras to enhance grandeur and realism, building a new world fitting the fantasy flavor of the Netflix version.
Prepare for a new legendary blaze of revenge ready to burn the throne "as before" yet "unlike before," premiering worldwide exclusively on Netflix on 3 December.
