Another hot topic has emerged online regarding "Scarlet Heart Thailand: Miracle Across Time." This blockbuster series eagerly awaited by fans stars Win Metawin, To Ton Tawan, Nonth Kanaphat, Te Tawan, Fourth Nattawat, Phuwin Tangsakyuen, Perth Tanapon, and Foss Jiratchapong, who compete in roles filled with love, revenge, and sharp intrigue. Upon releasing the teaser, debates arose about the costumes and cultural elements shown in the trailer.
This is a fantasy historical TV drama adapted from the Chinese novel "Bu Bu Jing Xin" by Tong Hua, which has both Chinese and Korean versions. The Korean adaptation, "Moon Lover," was also highly acclaimed internationally, "Moon Lover." It featured top handsome stars from the Korean entertainment industry.
The Thai version tells the story of a modern woman disappointed in love who wishes to find true love but fate sends her back in time into the body of "Fong Nuan," a woman from Wang Nam Lin who must move to the fictional city of Alawi. There, she becomes entangled in the power struggles of seven princes amid love, relationships, and inescapable destiny.
Some Myanmar viewers have noted that the costumes, accessories, and certain scenes closely resemble the royal attire of Myanmar’s Konbaung dynasty, especially from its late period, and have called on the production team to verify historical accuracy and clarify the costume origins to foster correct understanding of each country’s cultural heritage.
Additionally, on 20 October, an online petition was launched demanding that GMMTV and the production team review the costume designs, publicly clarify their choices, and appropriately acknowledge or credit Myanmar’s cultural elements if indeed used. Petitioners stressed that creative freedom should be balanced with studying history and respecting the identities of related cultures.
However, this remains an allegation and request from some viewers, requiring information from the production team and historical evidence for proper consideration. Therefore, it is premature to conclude that the costumes are cultural appropriation without clear explanation. The outcome remains to be seen.
