When mentioning Wat Phananchoeng Worawihan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, many think of the large statue of Luang Pho To, but along the riverside area of this temple also houses the shrine of Chao Mae Soi Dok Mak. This place is filled with a touching love legend and tears, becoming an important pilgrimage site for spiritual devotees nationwide who come to pray for successful love, to find a partner, and to gain stability.
Back in the Ayutthaya era, the legend tells of King Sai Nam Phueng, who went to receive Princess Soi Dok Mak, a royal daughter from the Chinese king, to be his queen. But when the boat procession reached Wat Phananchoeng, the king sent someone else to escort her to the palace rather than receiving her himself, which caused the princess to feel slighted and refuse to disembark.
King Sai Nam Phueng then teasingly said, "If you won’t come ashore, then stay here." Due to her heartfelt disappointment and a vow, the princess held her breath until she died. Deeply grieved, the king ordered a shrine to be built at the site of her cremation and named the temple "Wat Phananchoeng" (origin of the name linked to the princess who died holding her breath) as a memorial of love.
Besides praying to Chao Mae Soi Dok Mak, Wat Phananchoeng is also famous for its large Luang Pho To statue, known for blessings related to work, commerce, and prosperity.
Although the legend ends sadly, it is believed that the spirit of the goddess possesses great compassion. People commonly pray for the following:
