The coin was created during the era of Somdet Phra Sangharaja Chao Krom Luang Wachirayanwong (Mom Rajawongse Chuen Naphawong) of Wat Bowonniwet, the 13th Somdet Phra Sangharaja. This coin now commands prices in the hundreds of thousands, with demand far exceeding the several hundred thousand coins that exist, due to the creator being a highly significant monastic figure.
Somdet Chao Prakoon reached his 80th birthday on 22 Nov 1952, but the commemorative sacred object production for this occasion began in 1953, led by Phra Sathusil Sangwon (Son) as the chief organizer, with the casting of the statues taking place on 4 Apr 1953.
The first batch of Phra Phiri Phinas items cast included statues, Kring amulets, the pointed lotus and square lotus designs, the victory Phra Phiri Phinas amulet, the Phra Phiri Phinas coin, and holy water pots. Additionally, Mom Rajawongse Kukrit Pramoj created the first crescent moon-shaped (split egg) coin with embossed yantra in 1952—those who possess authentic items are encouraged to share them for viewing.
Somdet Chao Prakoon Somdet Phra Sangharaja (Mom Rajawongse Chuen) was a royal monk known for his strict discipline and simplicity. Despite his high rank, when in good health, he preferred to walk rather than use vehicles. Gifts offered to him were distributed widely without attachment. As a result, Wat Bowonniwet has a tradition of holding a lottery for birthday gifts every year.
He was an exemplary monk who wore a yellow robe dyed with jackfruit heartwood (lak color) throughout more than 70 years of ordination and did not emphasize his rank. When Somdet Phra Sangharaja Krom Luang Chinworasiriwat of Wat Ratchabophit passed away, the clergy considered appointing him as successor due to his royal lineage, but he declined, stating that Somdet Phra Wanrat (Phae) of Wat Suthat, who had more seniority, was more deserving.
During that time, royal visitors from Cambodia, Mon, and Burma frequently paid respects, such as King Norodom Sihanouk, whose chief consort was a niece of Somdet Chao Prakoon. Upon tracing the Thai royal lineage, it was found that Somdet Chao Prakoon was a great-grandchild of Chao Chom Madan Noi (daughter of Prince Aphai, son of King Taksin the Great).
Because of his great merit, Somdet Phra Sangharaja was highly respected by Kings Rama V through Rama VIII and served as the teacher to Kings Rama VI, VII, and VIII, and as the royal preceptor for King Rama IX during his ordination. This has continuously enhanced the value of all sacred objects created during his tenure.
