Luang Pu Suks Kitchen-Distributed Amulet, Lacquered Powder Material, Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao

History and Background of the Amulet

The Kitchen-Distributed amulet is made from powder material in shades of dark brown, black, and gray, created around 1917 to 1920 CE. It is considered very rare because Luang Pu Suk produced only a small number, especially those made from powder. Collectors refer to this particular design as the “Kitchen-Distributed” because some recipients received it while assisting in the kitchen at Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao. However, Luang Pu Suk did not intend to create it solely for kitchen workers; others received it at Wang Nang Luang during a teacher homage ceremony and from other places as well.

The material of the Kitchen-Distributed amulet closely resembles that of the pot-bellied Phra Pidta amulet, as if they were made simultaneously. The Buddhist image depicts the Buddha seated on a two-tiered lotus base, with sharp lines, a pointed head, and a clearly defined monk's shawl. The back comes in two styles: convex and smooth. Some pieces bear inscriptions such as the word “Buddha” or the character “Na,” while others have five inscribed characters. The lacquered powder material is divided into fine and coarse textures; the coarse material tends to be gray with a smooth back.

The fine-textured amulets have a brownish-black color and usually a convex back. Both large and small Kitchen-Distributed amulets were not produced all at once but pressed over a certain period. The front mold was used on one side only. Powder material was pressed onto the mold, causing the amulet edges to have some overflow. After partially drying, a rounded tool was inserted from the bottom of the amulet, creating a hole within the body.
