This event occurs only once a year as the wealth-opening day or treasury-opening festival called "Goddess Guanyin's Money Borrowing Day 2026." The date is counted 26 days after the Chinese New Year (Chiu Ek) based on the Chinese lunar calendar and is considered an auspicious time. This year it falls on 14 March at 20:00.
The belief is that on this day, Goddess Guanyin opens her treasury and wealth to allow her followers to request blessings and prosperity, granting wealth with compassion.
Devotees do not have to travel to Hong Hom, Hong Kong’s Goddess Guanyin temple (which can be very crowded). If convenient, they may queue for the ceremony, but nowadays, worshippers can pray at any location with a Goddess Guanyin statue, such as Macau, the oldest Guanyin temples, or in Thailand at places like E Tong Tian Tai Shrine in Prachinburi, Guanyin Shrine in Chokchai 4, Bangkok, Mahabodhisattva Guanyin in Ramindra, Bangkok, or the Guanyin Shrine at Ko Loi Temple in Sri Maha Racha, Chonburi Province. People can worship wherever is nearest or even at home by setting up a shrine and performing the money and luck requesting ritual.

1. Upon arrival, offer flowers and large incense bundles according to your faith and convenience. Light incense and candles, state your full name, address, and the exact amount of money you wish to request, specifying the currency (baht, dollar, yuan, pound, etc.) to reinforce the request.
Clearly state your purpose for the money and that the prayer is solely for yourself. Specify the date when, if the wish is fulfilled, you will return to thank Goddess Guanyin. Vows or promises are strictly prohibited.
2. Insert incense sticks into the large incense burner provided by the temple. Previously, worshippers had to scoop incense ash into red envelopes themselves, but now after placing incense, staff will hand out red envelopes containing incense ash for you, eliminating the need to scoop it yourself.
3. Circulate the red envelope three times above the incense burner to receive merit and blessings before taking it home.
Keep the red envelope carefully at home in your wallet or on your altar. If your prayer is granted, return to repay the money to Goddess Guanyin at Hong Hom.
Return to the temple to pay respects and give thanks by preparing offerings and joss paper money, symbolizing the money you return to Goddess Guanyin.
