Phra Nang Phaya, Knee-Curved Mold, Popular Red Clay Type

Phra Nang Phaya from Wat Nang Phaya, Phitsanulok province, is known as the "Queen of Amulets" within the Benjapakee set. It was created by Queen Wisutthikasat during the early Ayutthaya period (Sukhothai art style). It is distinct for its triangular pediment shape, Mara-victory posture, prominent chest, slender arms, absence of base and arch, and baked clay material featuring a smooth surface with sand granule texture. It is renowned for its powers of charm, popularity, protection, and strong supernatural abilities.

The origin of its legend and artistic uniqueness

* Creator's legend: It is believed that Queen Wisutthikasat (mother of King Naresuan the Great) created these amulets during the restoration of Wat Nang Phaya to uphold Buddhism and distribute them to soldiers and officials.

* Artistic uniqueness: Pure Sukhothai-style art. The amulet's form is graceful, resembling a woman but exuding dignity, hence named "Nang Phaya" (Queen).

* Clay material and sand granules: The amulet is made from baked clay mixed with sand. After more than 500 years, the clay contracts, causing "sand granules" to appear on the surface, which is a key identifying feature.

* Amulet colors: Result from firing at different temperatures, including red (most popular), yellow, green, and black.

* Important standard molds (as recognized by amulet experts)

1. Knee-Curved Mold: The largest and most popular mold.

2. Straight Knee Mold: Divided into regular straight knee and fallen-hand knee types.

3. Large Chest Mold

4. Sangkhati Mold (Medium mold)

5. Small Chest Mold

6. Angel Mold or Flat Chest Mold (Small mold)

Powers and virtues

Since it was created by a queen during wartime, Phra Nang Phaya is imbued with powers of charm and popularity, earning affection from superiors and patrons, facilitating promotions, and is also famed for protection, invulnerability, and victory over enemies.
