Asalha Puja Day 2026 is a significant Buddhist observance. This important Buddhist day marks when the Buddha gave his first sermon and the first monk was ordained. It invites reflection on its history, significance, and teachings that Buddhists should practice for auspiciousness.
Asalha Puja Day It falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 8th lunar month annually. It is one of Buddhism's internationally recognized important days and is designated a public holiday in Thailand. The term "Asalha Puja" (pronounced either A-sa-na-ha-bu-cha or A-sa-na-la-ha-bu-cha, per the Royal Institute's announcement) means worship on the full moon of the Asalha month.
This day is important because it marks when the Buddha delivered his first sermon, the first teaching, to the five ascetics (Pañcavaggiya) in the Isipatana Deer Park in Varanasi, after his enlightenment.
Looking back to the Buddha's time, Asalha Puja Day marks the beginning of the public proclamation of Buddhism to the world, with four key events occurring.
1. The first proclamation of the Buddhist teaching It was the day the Buddha began spreading Buddhism for the world to hear.
2. The first sermon He delivered the "Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta," the foundational teaching.
3. The ordination of the first monk "Sāriputta" (Ananda's name in Pali is ambiguous here, but Sāriputta is traditionally recognized) among the five ascetics attained enlightenment and requested ordination by "Ehipassiko Upasampadā" (the Buddha himself ordained him), becoming the first arahant disciple.
4. The completion of the Triple Gem It was the first day all three essential elements of Buddhism—the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha—were fully established.
The Buddha's first sermon rejected self-mortification and indulgence in sensual pleasures, guiding people to follow the "Middle Way" (Majjhima Patipada), which includes two main parts:
The practice leading to the cessation of suffering
The Noble Eightfold Path (the way to end suffering) 1. Right View
- Understanding rightly 2. Right Intention
- Thinking rightly 3. Right Speech
- Speaking rightly 4. Right Action
- Acting rightly 5. Right Livelihood
- Earning a living rightly 6. Right Effort

Activities on Asalha Puja Day and the candlelight procession On Asalha Puja Day 2026, Thai Buddhists continue to uphold the noble tradition by going to temples in the morning to make merit by giving alms, offering robes to monks, and listening to sermons.
In the evening, they participate in the "candlelight procession" holding flowers, incense, and candles while circumambulating (walking clockwise) around the ordination hall three times to honor the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, while cultivating meditation and insight to purify the mind.
Asalha Puja Day is not just a public holiday but a reminder for Buddhists to reflect on the origins of Buddhism and apply the "Middle Way" teaching mindfully in their daily lives.
