Many devotees may wonder why after pouring water offering, one must "turn over the bowl." We explore the spiritual mystery according to ancient beliefs and offer guidance on the proper way to pour water offering so practitioners can fully receive the merit's blessings.
Pouring water offering is a long-standing tradition among Thai Buddhists, performed to dedicate merit to ancestors, departed relatives, and karmic creditors. However, the act of "turning over the bowl"—inverting the water vessel after pouring all the water—is not just a customary gesture but holds a profound spiritual meaning.
According to ancient worldly beliefs, the phrase "turning over the bowl" often symbolizes severing ties or ending relationships. Yet, in Buddhist teachings and traditional beliefs, turning the bowl after pouring carries a positive significance, representing complete and pure surrender.
Pouring the water to the last drop and then inverting the container symbolizes dedicating all merit without stinginess or attachment. It reflects genuine letting go and releasing all clinging from the heart. Additionally, it signifies a firm intention that the merit has been fully and properly transferred to the recipients.
To maximize the merit gained from pouring water offering according to belief, one should follow the correct steps mindfully.
Prepare clean water. Use clean water without impurities, placed in a prepared container such as a water-offering vessel, glass, or small bowl.
Begin pouring water when the monks chant. When the monks start chanting "Yatha..." begin pouring water continuously into a receiving vessel without interruption. At the same time, set your mind in prayer, radiate loving-kindness, and think of those to whom you wish to dedicate merit.
Pour all the water when reaching the chant. When the monks chant "Sapphi..." pour out the remaining water completely.
Turning over the bowl. After pouring all the water, invert the pouring vessel (such as the water-offering bowl or small bowl) slightly over the receiving container as a symbolic gesture that the water has been fully poured. Then, join your palms in respect until the blessing concludes.
Pour the water at the base of a tree. Pour the offered water onto the ground or at the base of a large tree, asking "Mother Earth" (Phra Mae Thorani) to witness this act of merit-making.
The act of "turning over the bowl" after pouring water offering is not an act of superstition or a worldly metaphor for severing ties. Rather, it is a wise spiritual teaching and mystery that encourages humans to give selflessly, free from stinginess, and to transfer merit sincerely. Understanding this meaning and performing it with a focused mind will ensure that every act of merit-making brings true blessings and fulfillment.
