"Old-fashioned amulets focused on wealth, but nowadays, without survival or emotional control, no amount of wealth can be kept." This reflects the voices of younger generations who now focus on protective sacred objects.
Today, Thairath Online takes a deep dive into the modern trend of spiritual protection focusing on "protective amulets" that help maintain awareness and avoid danger. We present a list of the four most popular Buddha amulets and detailed steps for preparing offerings and chanting to worship the vehicle guardian spirit for safe travels.
Amid ongoing road safety challenges and accidents remaining a major issue, "travel protection amulets" no longer serve just as superstitious beliefs but have become key items that help drivers stay "cautious" on every journey. For long-distance travelers, the top four most trusted protective Buddha amulets in Thailand are:
1. Luang Pu Thuat from Wat Chang Hai is believed that carrying or worshiping this amulet in the vehicle offers miraculous protection from serious accidents.
2. Somdej Wat Rakang Kositaram known as the emperor of amulets, is said to have universal spiritual powers, including safeguarding and ensuring safety from all dangers.
3. Phra Pidta Maha Ut symbolizes "blocking" evil and external dangers from causing harm, ideal for those traveling to unfamiliar places.
4. Phra Leela Med Kanun represents progress and steady, safe advancement in every direction.
Beyond carrying amulets, the traditional belief in worshiping the vehicle guardian spirit remains popular for praying for safe driving and continuous good luck throughout journeys.
The belief in the "vehicle guardian spirit" has long been part of Thai culture, adapted from the boat spirit tradition—the protective deity residing with the vehicle to ensure safe travels, enhance luck, success in business, and boost morale during trips. This ritual is commonly performed when buying a new vehicle, during Songkran, Chinese New Year, or other important days.
1. Arrange all offerings in front of the vehicle.
2. Start the engine and honk the horn three times to mark the auspicious moment.
3. Light incense and candles, recite the threefold Namo chant, then begin the worship chant.
(Recite Namo three times) "Sutinang Wattu Thanang Asawa Khayawahang Hotu Thutiyampi Sutinang Wattu Thanang Asawa Khayawahang Hotutathiyampi Sutinang Wattu Thanang Asawa Khayawahang Hotu"
Prayer "I, (full name), respectfully worship the vehicle guardian spirit protecting this vehicle. Please bless me and my family with safe travels, protection from all accidents, prosperity in work, progress, and continuous happiness and success."
However, while sacred objects and rituals offer strong psychological support, the most important factor in driving safety is "caution" and constant mindfulness, because "faith" may bring miracles, but true safety starts with ourselves... This is something to believe in and never "disregard."
