Visakha Bucha Day falls on the full moon, the 15th lunar day of the 6th month. It is important because three significant events happened on this day, though in different years: the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha. These are as follows:
The birth event
The Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha, son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya of Kapilavastu, on the full moon, the 15th lunar day of the 6th month, at Lumbini Grove.
The enlightenment event
Prince Siddhartha renounced worldly life and after 35 years of age attained enlightenment as the Supreme Buddha under the Bodhi tree by the Neranjara River, today known as Bodh Gaya in India.
The parinirvana event
After teaching for over 45 years, the Buddha passed into parinirvana at age 80 in the Sal Forest Park, now Kushinagar, India.
It is believed that Visakha Bucha observance began during the Sukhothai era, with Thailand adopting ceremonial practices from Sri Lanka.
In the past, on Visakha Bucha, the king, courtiers, and the people of Sukhothai decorated the capital with flowers and lit lamps or candles continuously for three days and nights to venerate the Triple Gem.
The king and royal family observed precepts and made merit, attending candlelight processions in the evening, while the general public kept precepts, listened to sermons, and offered alms, continuing these traditions to the present.
Visakha Bucha marks the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha. Consequently, on 13 December 1999 CE, the United Nations declared it a global day (Vesak Day) and a holiday to enable Buddhists to make merit and participate in candlelight processions.
