What is Yam Ubakong? Why did people in the past commonly use it to determine auspicious times?

Yam Ubakong refers to auspicious times traditionally used by Thais to check before leaving home. Some also used it when taking new cars out or moving into a new house, believing that choosing an auspicious time would bring success and protection from accidents and dangers. Conversely, selecting an inauspicious time could lead to misfortune or accidents.

Yam Ubakong is represented as a rectangular shape resembling a yantra, which is why it is sometimes called " Yantra Ubakong ". It is divided into sections, each marked with circle and cross symbols. Historically, there is a story that Burmese prisoners used Yam Ubakong to escape jail, leading to it being known as "Burmese Jailbreak Time" Sometimes beliefs surrounding Yam Ubakong also extend to invulnerability talismans and lock-breaking charms.

How many types of Yam Ubakong are there as a time prediction practice for travel?

Yam Ubakong 2026, widely known since ancient times, has three types:

1. Yam Ubakong based on day and time (the most popular method)
2. Yam Ubakong for waxing moon phase
3. Yam Ubakong for waning moon phase

The latter two types reference lunar positions, showing that Yam Ubakong is a calculated practice, rooted in traditional beliefs rather than being arbitrarily created.

The origin of "Yam Ubakong" and the Burmese jailbreak auspicious time belief

The history of Yam Ubakong is told to have originated during the reign of King Rama I (Buddhist Era 2325-2352) with accounts varying slightly on the exact year, some saying 1795 CE and others 1807 CE.

At that time, the King of Ava in Burma ordered his main generals to lead multiple armies to attack Chiang Mai, but Prince Kawila of Chiang Mai successfully defended the city, causing the Burmese troops to retreat and besiege it instead. King Rama I commanded the Front Palace to send reinforcements to aid Chiang Mai and defeated the Burmese army.

The Thai side captured a Burmese general as a prisoner. When the prisoners were ordered to undress and gather, a rectangular yantra divided into sections was seen on the general’s chest, marked with circles and crosses. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the general’s name was " Ubakong " and he created the yantra himself. The captors had the yantra copied and translated into Thai.

Ubakong also revealed he was a Thai taken captive with his father during the second fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 CE. He was transferred to Bangkok for interrogation and was found to have Thai relatives. Ubakong then disclosed secrets of the Ava kingdom and was granted money to start anew, leading to the spread of the Ubakong yantra among Thais.

Later, Ubakong claimed supernatural powers, leading villagers to believe he had magical spells and worship him as a special figure. He was imprisoned in Wat Pho prison but managed to break his chains and escape back to Burma. This fueled the legend of the Ubakong yantra’s power and its use for determining auspicious times. Ancient Thais thus adopted Yam Ubakong as a predictive art for travel, passing down the belief through generations to this day.
