Among the faith of Thai and Chinese people, one of the revered figures commonly worshipped to enhance financial luck and prosperity is "Phra Sangkajai" the arhat disciple filled with Buddhist wisdom and praised by the Buddha as an outstanding master in distinguishing the Dharma. Many may recognize his plump and abundant figure, but few know the fascinating origins of his legend, which is rich with spiritual lessons.
In Buddhist history, Phra Maha Kaccayana or "Phra Sangkajai" was originally the son of a Brahmin priest in the reign of King Chandrapajjota. He was extremely handsome, with radiant skin, so much so that he was admired and desired by many men and women alike.
Tired of people focusing only on his outward appearance rather than listening to his teachings, he made a vow to transform his body into a plump, protruding belly figure to reduce his physical charm and encourage people to pay attention to his Dharma instead. This is the origin of the distinctive image seen today, reflecting his sacrifice for the higher goal of spreading the Buddhist teachings.
Although he was a wise arhat, why do people commonly worship him for "good fortune"?
Phra Sangkajai is more than just a figure for attracting wealth; he serves as a reminder of the importance of "wisdom" and "detachment from appearance." For those in commerce or seeking encouragement, worshipping him is a good method to cultivate mindfulness, diligence, and kindness toward others.
From a Buddhist perspective, worshiping Phra Sangkajai is to remember his qualities of wisdom and generosity.
Setting Up an Altar The altar should be placed in a clean, well-lit area, with fresh water offered regularly.
Offerings Common offerings include white or yellow flowers, clean water, and auspicious fruits such as oranges, symbolizing good fortune.
Key Points It is not merely about asking for wealth, but about consistently practicing generosity, maintaining moral precepts, and using wisdom in earning a livelihood, following his example.
While worshiping sacred figures provides spiritual support, true success comes from taking action and persevering.
