20-Year Legend of Overflowing-Stuffed Grilled Sticky Rice and Steamed Millet Rice at Uthai Thanis Pharmacy Alley, Starting at 10 Baht

Whenever the cold breeze blows, people line up at this shop: “Steamed Millet Rice & Grilled Sticky Rice,” a long-established favorite in Uthai Thani.

For those who stroll along the “Pharmacy Alley Walking Street” in Uthai Thani province on a Saturday evening, besides the charm of the old houses, what draws crowds to stop and gather densely is the enticing aroma from P’ Chawisa Thongchat’s renowned Thai dessert shop, celebrated for over 20 years. The must-try highlight is the hot steamed millet rice, the star of the shop, wafting a fragrant scent that invites guests.

“Steamed millet rice” uses naturally green young sticky rice grains, roasted and pounded flat just right before being steamed until soft and tender. It is served with shredded coconut and granulated sugar, delivering a sweet and creamy flavor with a pleasantly chewy texture, all for only 20 baht per bag.

Another unmissable item is the grilled sticky rice cooked over charcoal—another legend selling so fast the wraps barely keep up. The original recipe remains affordably priced at 10 baht each. The special feature lies in the fragrant, rich coconut milk sticky rice stuffed with smooth, creamy fillings available in three choices: naturally sweet banana, moderately fragrant and creamy taro, and soft, silky sweet potato.

Each piece is carefully wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over low charcoal heat until the leaves emit a slightly smoky aroma. Eating it hot, especially in the cool weather, is truly delightful.
