Anyone visiting Laplae District in Uttaradit Province who hasn't tasted the local dish called vegetable rice wrap has yet to truly experience the area. At Baan Bon Doi restaurant in Si Phanom Mat Subdistrict, this dish has been elevated to attract tourists with a trendy menu called"Rice-Wrapped Pizza"which perfectly blends traditional methods with modern flavors, becoming a popular check-in spot where everyone who visits must order it.

Sureeporn Rattanarod, the 52-year-old owner, explained the origin of this delicious dish, saying originally"vegetable rice wrap"is an ancient local dish from Laplae people, made by spreading rice flour on cloth stretched over a clay steamer and cooking it with steam. Later, it evolved into vegetable rice wrap by adding various fillings. At Baan Bon Doi, they were among the first to create rice-wrapped pizza, highlighting a unique secret dipping sauce developed in-house to achieve a balanced and distinct flavor.

The preparation begins with mixing pizza ingredients—egg combined with the special dipping sauce, glass noodles, carrots, and enoki mushrooms—then set aside. Next, black sesame rice flour dough is spread on cloth over a clay steamer with holes that let steam rise, similar to making steamed rice crackers. When the dough partly cooks, the prepared mixture is poured on top and spread into a round sheet, then topped with imitation crab meat, or for seafood pizza, shrimp and squid are added. The lid is closed and steamed for about 10 minutes until cooked and fragrant. The dish is then plated, garnished with fried garlic and culantro, ready to serve a deliciously soft, chewy, and rich bite every time.

Besides the rice-wrapped pizza, the restaurant offers more than 20 varieties of rice wraps, such as rice wrap on a stick, rolled rice wrap with egg and toppings, seafood vegetable rice wrap, as well as made-to-order dishes, papaya salad, and fresh coffee. The setting is a Lanna-style house shaded by trees, ideal for gatherings and receptions at budget-friendly prices, with general rice wraps starting at 25 baht and rice-wrapped pizza beginning at 29 baht.
