Exploring the Legend of Tiew Puk: The 20-Baht Wood-Fired Noodle Shop Icon of Mae Klong Featuring the First Braised Pork Skin

Tiew Puk, a legend passed down through generations, is known as the first wood-fired noodle shop to serve braised pork skin alongside the noodles, emphasizing its delicious taste at an affordable price that is hard to find today.

In an era of rising living costs, the municipal district of Samut Songkhram still hosts a legendary noodle shop that has long sold its dishes for just 20 baht. This shop is known as Grandma Puk's Noodles, or as locals commonly call it,"Tiew Puk"which has become a key destination for food lovers seeking traditional flavors at budget-friendly prices.

Tiew Puk's main feature is its special braised pork skin recipe that is tender and melts in the mouth, considered the first in the province to pair this dish with noodles.

Mr. Chanin Srikamnerd, the second-generation heir, recounted the shop’s beginnings: it was founded by his father-in-law and grandmother-in-law, Grandma Puk. The shop has been open for over 45 years, starting as a pushcart before becoming a permanent store near Wat Thammanimit. A rare characteristic today is cooking over a wood or charcoal stove instead of gas, which not only cuts costs—since customers often bring wood scraps as fuel—but also gives the noodles a unique smoky aroma. In the past, this shop was beloved by laborers at the mackerel processing plant for its generous portions and rich flavors.

The most popular dish, ordered at nearly every table, is the braised pork skin simmered until tender, accompanied by freshly fried pork cracklings. Customers can choose from dry noodles, clear soup, tom yum, or yen ta fo, with prices starting at just 20 baht per bowl, and a special portion for 25 baht. Most customers pre-order two bowls to continue enjoying the flavors.

For those interested in experiencing the legendary wood-fired taste, Grandma Puk's noodle shop is located on Ratchayat Raksah Road near the Provincial Waterworks Authority office. It operates from Saturday to Thursday (closed Fridays) from 07:00 to 14:30.
