Exploring the nutritional value of“Norwegian Saba”a sea fish rich in omega-3, vitamin D, and protein that supports muscle building, along with consumption advice from a dietitian at Mahidol University.
In an era where health care starts with the food on your plate,“sea fish”is one of the top ingredients people think of, especially“Norwegian Saba”which is not only a popular menu item in Japanese restaurants but is also classified as a“superfood”rich in healthy fats and nutrients that many Thais commonly lack. Discover why this Norwegian striped mackerel is the most valuable choice for health enthusiasts.
Ms. Oschild Nakken, Southeast Asia Regional Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), stated that the key reason Norwegian Saba is highly popular is its origin — it grows in the cold, pristine waters of Norway. This results in the fish accumulating more healthy fats than fish in warmer waters, giving the flesh a juicy, delicious quality and distinctive pattern. Nowadays, Thai consumers can access this premium ingredient more easily at affordable prices.
“Thais are already familiar with saba fish, especially in Japanese restaurants, where over 80% of Norwegian Saba is consumed in Thailand. Last year, 8,200 tons of Norwegian Saba were exported to Thailand, valued at over 1.02 billion baht, reflecting growing consumer awareness of the difference in fish raised in Norway's cold, clear waters,” Ms. Nakken added.
Dr. Thanit Winitchakool, lecturer and dietitian at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, shared insights during a seminar that Norwegian Saba is not only a source of protein but offers a complete range of nutrients in one fish.
At the event, family lifestyle influencers shared experiences creating Thai dishes using Norwegian Saba.
For good health, Dr. Thanit, a dietitian from Mahidol University, recommends consuming at least two servings of fatty sea fish per week (about 240 grams weekly) to get sufficient omega-3 to prevent cardiovascular disease. Importantly, cooking methods matter: although Norwegian Saba is delicious fried or grilled, steaming or boiling preserves the omega-3 content best.
Choosing to eat“Norwegian Saba”is not just about taste but a worthwhile health investment, offering complete nutrients—protein, healthy fats, and vitamins—at an affordable price, aligning with the concept“Norwegian Saba: Fish and Firm”which promotes strong bodies in Thais through quality ingredient choices.
