Unlocking the Secret to Good Health: Why Norwegian Saba Is the Fish Nutritionists Recommend and How Much to Eat

Exploring the nutritional value of“Norwegian Saba”a sea fish rich in omega-3, vitamin D, and protein that supports muscle building, along with consumption advice from a dietitian at Mahidol University.

In an era where health care starts with the food on your plate,“sea fish”is one of the top ingredients people think of, especially“Norwegian Saba”which is not only a popular menu item in Japanese restaurants but is also classified as a“superfood”rich in healthy fats and nutrients that many Thais commonly lack. Discover why this Norwegian striped mackerel is the most valuable choice for health enthusiasts.

A treasure from the sea: Why“Norwegian Saba”is different from ordinary fish?

Ms. Oschild Nakken, Southeast Asia Regional Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), stated that the key reason Norwegian Saba is highly popular is its origin — it grows in the cold, pristine waters of Norway. This results in the fish accumulating more healthy fats than fish in warmer waters, giving the flesh a juicy, delicious quality and distinctive pattern. Nowadays, Thai consumers can access this premium ingredient more easily at affordable prices.

“Thais are already familiar with saba fish, especially in Japanese restaurants, where over 80% of Norwegian Saba is consumed in Thailand. Last year, 8,200 tons of Norwegian Saba were exported to Thailand, valued at over 1.02 billion baht, reflecting growing consumer awareness of the difference in fish raised in Norway's cold, clear waters,” Ms. Nakken added.

Examining the nutritional value: Why choose“Norwegian Saba”?

Dr. Thanit Winitchakool, lecturer and dietitian at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, shared insights during a seminar that Norwegian Saba is not only a source of protein but offers a complete range of nutrients in one fish.

  • High-quality protein: contains all essential amino acids, including“leucine”which stimulates muscle growth after exercise.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA): rich in omega-3 at very high levels; consuming one serving (about 100 grams) provides enough omega-3 to meet daily requirements, benefiting heart health and children's brain development.
  • A source of vitamins D and B12: Given that about one-third of Thais suffer from vitamin D deficiency, eating one serving of Norwegian Saba provides 30-40% of the daily vitamin D requirement.
  • High safety standards: According to analysis by the Norwegian Marine Research Institute, this fish group has very low heavy metal (mercury) contamination, classified as Best Choice, safe for continuous consumption.

Voices from real consumers: Delicious and healthy for the whole family

At the event, family lifestyle influencers shared experiences creating Thai dishes using Norwegian Saba.

  • BB Memory: This foodie family confirmed that the fish“is delicious effortlessly”because its flesh is juicy and rich in healthy fats, requiring minimal seasoning.
  • Ms. Aum Napat: A modern mother who appreciates the convenience of cooking Norwegian Saba, which cooks quickly and pairs excellently with Thai chili paste, helping her daughter get complete nutrition.
  • eatwithdyny: shared about the dish“Rice mixed with saba fish”which suits her husband's intense workout lifestyle as it is easy to digest and helps muscle recovery.

For good health, Dr. Thanit, a dietitian from Mahidol University, recommends consuming at least two servings of fatty sea fish per week (about 240 grams weekly) to get sufficient omega-3 to prevent cardiovascular disease. Importantly, cooking methods matter: although Norwegian Saba is delicious fried or grilled, steaming or boiling preserves the omega-3 content best.

Choosing to eat“Norwegian Saba”is not just about taste but a worthwhile health investment, offering complete nutrients—protein, healthy fats, and vitamins—at an affordable price, aligning with the concept“Norwegian Saba: Fish and Firm”which promotes strong bodies in Thais through quality ingredient choices.
