Suddenly, a cake that doesn't look very appetizing has become a popular menu item with so many customer pre-orders that production can't keep up. This is the "Kan Mor Aoy Cake."
Normally, if we find hair in our food, everyone would immediately call the staff to change the dish. But at a small cake shop along the Lampang-Maetha road near Sri Chum intersection, the word"Kan" (hair)has instead become the reason people have to book in advance, and the shop can't make cakes fast enough to sell.
Madame Boat Cake shop is famous for carefully made cakes and pastries, using fresh buttercream to decorate the cakes, topping them with jelly and strawberry sauce. But currently, the hottest menu item, unexpectedly so, is the Kan Mor Aoy Cake. Sometimes called"Kan Chomoy Cake"
The name comes from the appearance of lady's hair seaweed, which has strands resembling hair, hence the Thai nickname mentioned above. This seaweed is rich in vitamins and calcium, has antioxidant properties, and helps reduce cholesterol. It is a beneficial ingredient behind the cake's unusual name and somewhat unappetizing appearance.
The owner of Madame Boat Cake said that the shop currently has to rush to produce 30-50 cakes daily but still cannot meet demand. The storefront sells out every day, and the rest are available only by pre-order.
The cakes come in three sizes: a small 1/4 pound cake priced at 120 baht, a half-pound for 220 baht, and a 1-pound cake for 320 baht. Cupcakes are also available at 25 baht each. The shop also participates in the Thai Chuay Thai Plus program.
The owner said that to keep up with daily orders, they stay up late and wake early. Some nights they only get to rest at 1 a.m. because they don't want customers who come with intent to buy to leave disappointed with empty hands.
