Urgent Check: 4 Foods You Should Not Eat with Coffee — Some May Harm Your Health Without You Knowing

Coffee lovers should be cautious! Here is a list of foods and vitamins that should not be consumed together with "coffee" at breakfast or during the day, as they risk triggering acid reflux, blocking iron absorption, and causing caffeine buildup. Check what they are for better health.

Warning for coffee drinkers! Foods and vitamins that should not be taken with coffee."Coffee"

Drinking coffee in the morning or during the day is a routine that helps refresh the body. But did you know that choosing the wrong foods or vitamins to consume with coffee can harm your health more than you think? It not only risks heart palpitations but also blocks the body from fully absorbing essential nutrients.

Besides"Grapefruit"which experts have warned against, nutritional data also lists other foods to avoid eating with coffee, as follows.

1. Grapefruit and citrus fruits (risk of caffeine buildup)

According to Julia Zumpano, a dietitian from Cleveland Clinic, grapefruit contains compounds that slow liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing caffeine, causing caffeine to remain in the body for up to 25-30 hours and leading to heart palpitations. In addition, acidic fruits like oranges or lemons, when eaten with acidic coffee on an empty stomach, can worsen stomach irritation and trigger gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

2. Foods high in"iron"(reduces nutrient absorption)

Those who enjoy Western-style breakfasts with red meat, liver, egg yolks, or leafy greens like spinach should avoid drinking coffee immediately after meals. Coffee contains polyphenols and tannins, which inhibit iron absorption into the bloodstream. Regularly drinking coffee with these foods may increase the risk of iron-deficiency anemia.

3. Vitamins and supplements (body cannot fully utilize them)

Health-conscious people often take supplements with breakfast, but doctors and nutritionists advise against taking vitamins with coffee, especially calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamins B and D. The mild diuretic effect of caffeine causes the body to excrete water-soluble vitamins before they can be fully absorbed and used.

4. Fried and high-fat foods (trigger acid reflux and are hard to digest)

Eating fried or high-fat foods with coffee, such as fried dough sticks, fried chicken, or buttery pastries, delays stomach emptying. Combined with caffeine’s stimulation of stomach acid secretion, this relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing the risk of indigestion, bloating, and acid reflux symptoms.

Recommendations for drinking coffee safely

To maximize the benefits of both food and coffee, nutrition experts recommend leaving at least a 1-2 hour interval between meals (especially iron-rich meals or when taking medications/vitamins) and coffee consumption.

If you want to have a snack with your morning coffee, choose complex carbohydrates like oatmeal, whole wheat bread, or easily digestible proteins to help coat the stomach lining and maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day.
