If you've ever walked into a supermarket in the evening and your gaze immediately lands on the yellow sticker on sushi packs, bread, or sliced pork before anything else, you are one of the "yellow sticker hunters" that the Thairath poll is tracking down.
The yellow sticker, or discount label that stores place on products nearing their sell-by time, has become a shopping culture among city dwellers. Some plan their shopping trips to coincide with the sticker rounds, others have favorite stores where they know when good deals usually appear, while some don’t plan but won’t miss grabbing a deal when they see one.
Interestingly, although this behavior has become very common—from convenience stores like 7-Eleven and CJ More to supermarkets and wholesale stores such as Lotus's, Big C, Tops, Makro, Max Value, Gourmet Market, Go Wholesale, and Don Don Donki—hardly anyone has collected data on how Thai people hunt for yellow stickers.
Which product categories do people pick most often? Is it fresh foods like vegetables, meat, sausages, milk, yogurt; ready-to-eat foods like dishes, packed meals, sushi, sashimi; or bakery items such as bread, sandwiches, cakes, and donuts?
What is the golden time to shop? Some say discounts start appearing around 3 p.m., others insist 5 p.m. is when the best deals show up. More serious shoppers wait until 9 p.m. or later, believing that’s when the biggest markdowns happen. And a question many are curious about is how often others buy discounted items—whether it’s almost daily or only occasionally when they spot a good deal.
Thairath Poll invites readers to take part in a short survey consisting of just a few questions about their usual food purchases, favorite stores, typical shopping times, and frequency of buying discounted goods. It takes less than a minute to complete.
