Authentic Viengchan Pho at Nong Khai for 60 Baht per Bowl

Introducing Viengchan Pho, a small eatery on Prajak Silpakorn Road offering broth simmered with beef bones and meat for over five hours. The original recipe was received from a Viengchan friend and adapted to suit Thai palates.

At Nong Khai, standing by the Mekong River and looking across, Viengchan is just within reach. Some people purposely cross the Friendship Bridge for authentic pho, but this small restaurant on Prajak Silpakorn Road brings the original Viengchan flavor right to you.

Viengchan Pho is located in central Nong Khai, opposite Krungsri Bank, easy to find with clear signage. The owner, Thep, shared that he has always enjoyed noodle dishes. One day, he crossed to Vientiane and befriended a restaurant owner who kindly taught him the recipe. He then adapted it to suit Thai tastes. So, the recipe didn’t arrive by passport but through the friendship between people on both sides of the Mekong.

The highlight is the rich and balanced broth, simmered with beef bones and meat for over five hours, enhanced with the restaurant’s special spice blend. The appearance differs slightly from typical noodle soups, featuring sliced onions and tomatoes added for color.

A popular favorite is the "Laotian-style dipping sauce" with a fragrant peanut aroma, served with unlimited pickled and fresh vegetables. Pho bowls start at 60 baht, special at 70 baht. For more, there are dipping dishes with sauce starting at 80 baht, crispy pork rice porridge, and various crispy pork dishes to choose from.

Viengchan Pho is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. Advance orders can be made by calling 063-997-7770.
