Startling: 1 in 11 Bangkok Workers Has Diabetes! ThaiHealth Launches “SAANSOOK” App to Rescue Workers from NCDs

Concerningly, a survey found that 81% of Thai deaths are due to NCDs, while among working-age people in Bangkok, 1 in 11 has diabetes. ThaiHealth has partnered with KMUTT to launch an application.“SAANSOOK”(SAANSOOK), a free digital tool to restore urban health.

Urban health crisis! NCDs cause 81% of deaths among Thais.

The lifestyle habits of urban residents and office workers today are becoming a silent health time bomb. Recently, Dr. Pongtep Wongwacharapibul, manager of the ThaiHealth Promotion Foundation, stated that NCDs (non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease) are the leading cause of death in Thailand, accounting for 81% of all deaths.

This aligns with the 7th National Health Examination Survey (2024-2025) by ThaiHealth and Mahidol University, which found that 3.2 million Thais are at risk of NCDs. Moreover, the 2025 report from the Foundation for International Health Policy Development revealed alarming statistics for Bangkok workers:

  • More than 4 million work over 35 hours per week.
  • They exhibit the lowest levels of physical activity and fruit and vegetable intake in the country.
  • Among working-age Bangkok residents, 1 in 11 has diabetes, with most unaware of their condition.

Therefore, ThaiHealth collaborated with King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) to develop a tool that makes changing health behaviors easier and more enjoyable.
