Waking up in the morning feeling uncomfortable, with a swollen stomach and unexplained bloating, a gastrointestinal specialist reveals one simple habit to do before breakfast to stimulate digestion and eliminate excess sodium.
Bloating, stomach tightness, or a swollen feeling after eating a large meal, fried foods, or carbonated drinks is common for many. But if you wake up with bloating before eating anything, this phenomenon can cause confusion and discomfort for health-conscious individuals.
According to Dr. Ritu Nahar, MD, a gastroenterologist at Allied Digestive Health, the main cause of morning bloating is eating a heavy meal late at night. She recommends having dinner at least three hours before bedtime. Additionally, consuming gas-producing foods such as legumes, hard-to-digest foods, and conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic constipation, hormonal changes, or insufficient sleep can also trigger bloating upon waking.
For those facing this issue, Dr. Carmen Fong, MD, FACS, a colorectal surgeon and Chief Medical Officer at Bummed, advises that the best morning habit to manage bloating is“drinking a large glass of water immediately before breakfast.”This is a healthy practice that should be done regularly.
Dr. Fong further explains that drinking water helps flush out toxins and excess sodium, which cause water retention and bloating. While room temperature or cold water is beneficial, choosing warm water in the morning stimulates the digestive system to work more efficiently, quickly relieving discomfort.
Besides drinking water, both specialists recommend incorporating light physical activity into the morning routine, such as stretching, yoga, or walking. Dr. Nahar notes that just 10-20 minutes of light exercise can stimulate intestinal movement and effectively expel accumulated gas from the digestive tract.
The connection between light exercise and reduced bloating is supported by a small scientific study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, showing that physical movement significantly alleviates bloating. Moreover, a short walk after meals can prevent bloating from developing.
Morning foods to avoid.
Regarding favorite morning drinks, Dr. Nahar adds that sipping peppermint or ginger tea can be helpful. Peppermint relaxes intestinal muscles and reduces spasms, while ginger accelerates stomach contractions and relieves bloating discomfort. For coffee lovers, drinking coffee in the morning does not worsen bloating as long as you drink enough water and do not substitute coffee for water.
However, specialists emphasize that if morning bloating is frequent and chronic, you should see a gastrointestinal specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment. If it happens only occasionally, the behavioral tips above are sufficient to help you feel comfortable and confident welcoming a new day.
