Understanding “Phu Pha Lek - Phlan Hin Paed Kon”: Location and Its Significance on the Thailand-Cambodia Border

The clash between Thai and Cambodian soldiers at Phu Pha Lek on the evening of 7 Dec 2025 has brought attention to the area known as “Phu Pha Lek - Phlan Hin Paed Kon” and raised questions about its significance along the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Where is Phu Pha Lek - Phlan Hin Paed Kon located?

Phu Pha Lek - Phlan Hin Paed Kon is a strategic area along the Thailand-Cambodia border, situated in Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. It is part of the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range, which serves as a natural border between Thailand and Cambodia. The terrain here consists of forested mountains and rocky plateaus.

Moreover, Phu Pha Lek - Phlan Hin Paed Kon is close to areas near Preah Vihear Temple and Chong Bok, both of which are highly sensitive in terms of security.

Why is this area a point of conflict along the Thailand-Cambodia border?

The cause of the clash on 7 Dec 2025 stems from disputes over overlapping territorial claims and military activities in the area. The main factors include:

  • The Thai side, specifically the 13th Infantry Battalion, undertook a mission to "improve the route" from Phu Pha Lek to the Nen Phieng Fa checkpoint to facilitate administrative logistics support.
  • The Cambodian side viewed these actions as an intrusion into territory they also claim or as a violation of agreements maintaining the status quo in areas where the border has not been clearly demarcated. They responded with armed fire to counter or halt the Thai operations.

Additionally, prior tensions in nearby areas—such as claims of drone incursions into airspace and accusations regarding newly laid landmines—have made the situation fragile. Even minor military movements can easily escalate into conflict.

However, the “Phu Pha Lek” currently in the news should not be confused with the “Phu Pha Lek National Park,” a natural and historical tourist site located in the Phu Phan mountain range within Sakon Nakhon Province. This park covers parts of Song Dao District in Sakon Nakhon as well as parts of Udon Thani and Kalasin provinces. It is not near the Cambodia border. Because they share the same name, some confusion may arise about the area's risk level. The national park is a regular tourist destination, safe and unrelated to the unrest currently reported along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
