Steven Spielberg Announces He Will Not Use AI in Filmmaking, Emphasizing Creativity as a Human Domain

Steven Spielberg affirmed that he has never used AI in any of his films, emphasizing that he is not against technology but disagrees with replacing creative professionals with it.

Steven Spielberg, the legendary film director, revealed at the SXSW 2026 conference that he has never used AI in his films, including classics like Jaws, E.T., and Jurassic Park.

However, Spielberg stated that he does not oppose or reject technology. On the contrary, many of his works feature advanced technology themes, such as Ready Player One, Minority Report, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a film from 2001.

What Spielberg strongly opposes is the use of AI to directly replace creative personnel, and he will not support any technology aimed at reducing or replacing uniquely skilled human roles.

Spielberg said that in the storytelling process, especially screenwriting for film and TV, he does not want laptops simply sitting in front of a writer to replace human writers.

Currently, the global entertainment industry, especially in Hollywood, increasingly uses AI tools during production, including companies like Amazon and Netflix. Startups are also offering AI tools to filmmakers from major studios, smaller companies, and independents. Yet top directors like Spielberg still believe technology should serve as a supportive tool, not the primary means in creating art such as film.
