Among Hindu deities, one of the most fearsome and powerful gods is undoubtedly " Goddess Kali " whom many recognize from her image as a black-skinned goddess with a long tongue sticking out and a necklace of skulls. Yet symbolically and spiritually, Kali holds a deeper meaning beyond her frightening appearance.
According to Brahmin-Hindu legend, Goddess Kali is an incarnation of Goddess Uma Devi (Parvati) the consort of Lord Shiva, who manifested to defeat demons too powerful for any other deity to resist.
The most famous legend is about her battle with the demon Raktabija, who had the special power that whenever a drop of his blood touched the ground, a thousand new demons would arise. To stop this, Goddess Uma transformed into Kali to drink the demon's blood before it could reach the ground, ultimately defeating him.
Kali's appearance is often misunderstood as merely violent, but in religious philosophy, every element holds deep meaning.
Black skin: symbolizes emptiness and is the color that absorbs all colors, representing time that consumes everything.
The protruding tongue: expresses shame over her own extreme actions (legend says she accidentally stepped on Shiva during her destructive dance).
Necklace of skulls: represents severing"ego"or human self-attachment.
Her four arms: hold weapons (destruction) and grant blessings (creation).
Hindus regard Kali as " Mother of the Universe "who gives fierce yet decisive love, destroying evil, ignorance, and desires to clear the way for new beginnings and spiritual liberation.
In Thailand, devotion to Goddess Kali is very popular, especially at Sri Maha Uma Devi Temple (Wat Khaek Silom) where devotees often pray for
Amid the Songkran festival of 2026, which should be a time of refreshment, the atmosphere is instead filled with tension worldwide. Multiple astrologers agree that this year is" the year of fire and war " both geopolitically and economically, making it hard to resist the crises.
As the world enters a difficult era," gentle merit energy "may not suffice to protect. The energy of" Maha Kali " is the sole answer for believers, as she is the deity with the fiercest and fastest action. Amid life's wars and overwhelming obstacles, Kali's power acts " to cut the problem at its root " and " to cleanse curses " that block one’s fate. Worshiping her calms chaos and transforms a year of hardship into one of decisive victory.
Goddess Kali is not a deity of cruelty but a symbol of"time"and"ultimate truth"teaching humans to abandon ego for spiritual peace and rebirth.
