Songkran is approaching—are you ready to splash water? It’s expected that many will enjoy getting soaked during Songkran 2026. However, a common problem afterward is looking in the mirror and nearly screaming because of "sunburned skin"—bright red, painful, peeling skin. Some even get the unfortunate surprise of "water allergies," causing itchy rashes all over the face and body.
Don’t panic yet.Don’t let it ruin your mood to enjoy the water festivities. Although fully renewing skin cells naturally takes time, we can "halt inflammation, soothe burning sensations, and reduce redness" to restore clear, healthy skin within three days.
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a top hero for extinguishing sunburn flames. No other herb calms sun-damaged skin like aloe vera. Its gel has a cooling effect that draws heat away from the skin, reduces redness and burning, and rapidly hydrates dry skin damaged by UV rays.
To use, take fresh aloe vera gel after thoroughly rinsing off the yellow latex to prevent irritation. Chill it in the refrigerator until very cold, then apply to sunburned areas for 15–20 minutes. Alternatively, use a 100% pure aloe vera gel, applying a thick layer before bedtime.
2. Rang Jued (Tinospora crispa)
Known as the king of detoxifiers and water allergy remedies, Rang Jued is especially effective if you’ve played in unfiltered water from alleys or dirty sources and developed itchy red rashes. This herb is famous for detoxifying and alleviating allergic reactions, reducing inflammation caused by pollutants and chemicals in the water.
To use, crush fresh Rang Jued leaves finely, mix with a little clean water, and strain to extract the juice. Apply or compress the juice onto itchy rash areas to quickly reduce swelling and itching.
3. Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)
Gotu Kola is not just for healing internal bruises; it is a natural skincare remedy beloved by those with sensitive skin. It contains Asiaticoside, which promotes collagen production, wound healing, and significantly reduces inflammation. For those with thin, red, peeling skin or acne marks from water allergies, Gotu Kola helps repair the skin barrier to restore strength.
To use, wash fresh Gotu Kola leaves, crush or blend them, and strain the juice. Soak cotton pads in the juice and apply like a face mask, leaving it on for 15 minutes before rinsing off.
4. Phaya Yo (Clinacanthus nutans)
Phaya Yo, also known as the female Clinacanthus nutans, is effective for treating allergies. If you suffer hives or severe itchy rashes after Songkran water exposure, Phaya Yo has strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Extracts are available as creams or gels at pharmacies, which are convenient and fast-acting.
If fresh leaves are available, crush them with a little water and apply to itchy spots. For convenience and hygiene, use ointments or calamine lotions containing Phaya Yo, applying lightly to rash areas after bathing.
5. Cucumber
Cucumber is an excellent helper to refresh dull, tired skin after the Songkran battles. It is mostly water and rich in vitamin C, which reduces dark spots, tightens pores, and revitalizes dry, rough skin to a radiant, bright appearance.
Chill cucumber, slice it thinly, or blend it into a paste and apply to the face for 15–20 minutes. The coolness and vitamins will refresh and energize your skin immediately.
Precautions during the first 3 days of skin recovery: Although burning and redness improve, your skin remains very delicate. Avoid scrubbing, exfoliating, or using chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA). Focus on moisturizing regularly and applying sunscreen consistently. With this care, damaged skin will clear up and be ready to take on work after the long holiday.
