Songkran Law 2026, regulations governing the Thai New Year festival. The much-anticipated Thai New Year festival is known for its water celebrations, but an important aspect not to overlook is the legal provisions that relate to conduct during the festivities. Every year, there are incidents caused by unintentional violations, including harassment, unsafe driving, or risky behaviors that may cause serious accidents.
The Royal Thai Police have issued a warning to the public for Songkran 2026 to follow the principle of “3 Do 5 Don’t” to play safely, respect others’ rights, and avoid illegal acts that could result in fines or imprisonment as follows.
Devices with strong water pressure can injure others, especially in the eye area, posing serious danger.
Touching or molesting others in crowds is a criminal offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 200,000 baht.
Both drivers and passengers are forbidden to consume alcoholic beverages on vehicles, punishable by up to 6 months imprisonment or a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
This behavior risks causing serious accidents. If it causes death, it may be considered "negligent homicide," punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Bringing knives, weapons, or similar objects into water play areas may lead to fights and legal violations.
1. Respect others’ consent before splashing water; observe whether the person is willing, such as being in work attire or carrying important items. Respecting rights is essential.
2. Protect personal belongings. Water play areas are usually crowded; keep valuables secure, use waterproof bags, and avoid carrying items prone to theft.
3. Drive and use roads responsibly. The Songkran period is considered the "7 Dangerous Days." Check vehicle condition, rest adequately, and avoid driving while fatigued to reduce accident risks.
If you encounter unsafe situations or harassment, immediately report to authorities.
Songkran 2026 can be fun and safe if everyone respects laws and others' rights, following the principle of “3 Do 5 Don’t” as a guideline for mindful water play. This approach not only reduces accidents but also helps the festival remain joyful and memorable without legal risks.
