Allbirds, a footwear brand once known for its sustainability ethos, stunned the business world in 2026 by announcing a sharp change in direction—dropping its long-running footwear and apparel lines to focus on AI computing infrastructure, and renaming itself NewBird AI.
This shift came after the company recently soldall its footwear assets and brandsto American Exchange Group for $39 million.It also secured additional fundingof $50 million to support its transition to becoming a GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) provider.Along with cloud solutions specifically for AI,in particular.
Additionally, the company plans to file to amend its corporate bylaws to remove its environmental conservationand public benefit mission from its operational plans.This aims to focus solely on profitability in the technology market.
Although this news caused Allbirds' stock price to soar over 400%, analysts have begun questioning the sustainability of this plan, noting the abandonment of its original environmentally focused DNA to adopt an AI Native role amid a GPU shortage.Given the massive costs, this appears a very high-stakes gamble forAllbirds, which has faced continuous losses since going public in 2021.
If NewBird AI cannot prove its expertise in cloud computing or secure strong hardware partners, it could go down in history as another company that tried to ride the AI bubble and failed completely.
