Black burn stains on a steam iron’s soleplate not only make ironing harder but risk leaving marks or burns on your favorite clothes. This usually happens from excessive heat melting fabric fibers or accumulated starch residue. Today, we share simple home remedies to remove burn marks.
1. Toothpaste method (clean, spotless) Use white creamy toothpaste (not gel) which gently scrubs without damaging the iron’s surface.
How to do it Apply toothpaste on the cooled iron’s burn spots, let it sit briefly, then scrub gently with a damp cloth until the stains lift. Finally, wipe again with a clean cloth.
2. Salt method (removes deep stains) Salt effectively absorbs and scrubs away burn marks quickly.
How to do it Sprinkle salt on paper or cotton cloth, set the iron to maximum heat (steam off), then iron over the salt repeatedly until the burn stains transfer to the salt.
3. Baking soda and vinegar method For thick, stubborn burn marks, baking soda helps break down the stains for easy removal.
How to do it Mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste, apply to the iron’s surface and leave for 5-10 minutes. Then wipe off with a cloth dampened in vinegar; the stains will come off easily.
4. Candle wax (solves sticky iron issues) An old but effective method, especially for fresh burn marks.
How to do it: Heat the iron moderately, rub candle wax on the burn spots until it melts, then immediately wipe off the wax and burn residue with a thick cloth.
Besides the soleplate, steam holes matter too. Lime scale clogging them causes yellow stains on clothes. Mix vinegar and water 1:1, pour into the water tank, heat to max, and steam the mixture out onto an old cloth until empty. This cleans the internal pipes effectively.
