Who Can One Bag of Donated Blood Help? Unveiling the Secret of Giving That Returns More Than You Expect

Donating just one bag of blood (about 350-450 cc) may take only a few minutes for the donor, but for the recipient, it is an invaluable gift.

Many may not realize that a single bag of blood can save more than one life because medical advances allow it to be separated into components to help and sustain patients in three main groups.

One donation can be separated to save lives across three groups.

  • Red Blood Cells: A crucial aid in replacing anemia or large blood loss, acting like new life support for thalassemia patients, those undergoing major surgery, and emergency accident victims.
  • Platelets: A hero for patients with low platelet counts or easy bleeding, supporting treatment of leukemia patients and those with dengue fever.
  • Plasma: A key element in treating liver disease patients and those with immune deficiencies. Plasma is also used to produce essential medical drugs and serums, such as immune boosters, rabies vaccines, and hepatitis B antiserum.

Did you know blood has an "expiration date"?

Many wonder why the Thai Red Cross constantly needs blood donations. The main reason is that each blood component has a different shelf life, and some have very short storage durations.

Platelets have the shortest shelf life, lasting only 5 days. This is the main reason platelet shortages occur frequently, requiring continuous donors. Red blood cells can be stored for 35 to 42 days, while plasma, when frozen properly, can be preserved for up to one year.

The more you give, the more you gain: benefits for donors.

Blood donation is not only an act of charity but also offers health benefits to donors. It stimulates new blood production, allowing the body to produce strong, complete red blood cells, improving circulation.

Additionally, donors receive free health screening, as every blood bag is tested for hepatitis B and C viruses, syphilis, and HIV. If abnormalities are found, donors are confidentially notified and given special treatment rights. Regular donors meeting criteria also receive medical privileges and room discounts from the Thai Red Cross and affiliated hospitals.

Checklist to prepare perfectly before and after donating blood. To ensure smooth donation and the highest quality blood, donors should prepare as follows.

Before donation:

  • Get sufficient rest, sleeping at least 6-8 hours.
  • Drink 3-4 glasses of water 30 minutes before donating to improve circulation and prevent dizziness.
  • Avoid high-fat foods (such as chicken rice, pork belly, milk, butter) within 6 hours before donation, as these make plasma cloudy and unusable for patients.

After donation:

  • Sit and rest at the donation site for 10-15 minutes before getting up.
  • Drink more water than usual that day to replace lost fluids.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or activities requiring climbing for the first 24 hours.
