"Old amulets focused on wealth, but nowadays, without survival or emotional control, no matter how rich you are, you can’t maintain it." This reflects the perspective of young people turning to protective sacred objects.
Today, Thairath Online takes a deep dive into the new trend of spiritual protection focusing on "protective amulets" that help keep awareness and prevent harm. We present a list of four popular Buddhist amulets and detailed instructions for preparing offerings and chanting to the vehicle guardian spirit for safe travel.
In the current road situation where accidents remain a major problem, "travel protection amulets" no longer serve solely as superstition but have become important items to help drivers remain "cautious" on every journey. For those traveling long distances, Thailand’s top faith-based protections include these four amulets:
1. Luang Pu Thuat from Wat Chang Hai is believed to miraculously protect those who carry or worship it in their vehicles from serious accidents.
2. Somdej Wat Rakang Kositaram known as the emperor of amulets, possesses universal sacred power, including protection to keep the bearer safe from all dangers.
3. Phra Pidta Maha Udom symbolizes "closing off" evil and external dangers, ideal for those traveling to unfamiliar places.
4. Phra Leela Med Kanun represents progress and steady advancement in all directions with safety and confidence.
Beyond carrying amulets, the traditional belief of paying respect to the vehicle guardian spirit remains popular to seek blessings for safe driving and good fortune throughout journeys.
The belief in the vehicle guardian spirit has long been part of Thai culture, adapted from the boat spirit guardian who protects vessels. This spirit is thought to safeguard the vehicle, ensuring safe passage, boosting luck, business success, and morale. The ritual is commonly performed when acquiring a new vehicle, during Songkran, Chinese New Year, or other important occasions.
1. Arrange all offerings in front of the vehicle.
2. Start the car and honk the horn three times to invoke good fortune.
3. Light incense and candles, recite the threefold Namo homage, then begin chanting the protective mantra.
(Recite Namo three times) "Sutinang Watuthanang Asawa Kayavahang Hotu Thutiyampi Sutinang Watuthanang Asawa Kayavahang Hotutathiyampi Sutinang Watuthanang Asawa Kayavahang Hotu"
Prayer "I, (full name), pay respect to the vehicle guardian spirit protecting this vehicle. May the spirit bless me and my family with safe travels, protection from all accidents, prosperous work, success, and continuous happiness and growth."
However, while sacred objects and rituals provide strong psychological support, the most important factor in driving is "caution" and constant mindfulness, because "faith" may bring miracles, but true safety begins with ourselves… Believe it or not, do not "disrespect"
