However, this behavior is not new; it has been observed in football leagues, European championships, the Olympics, and other international competitions over the past decade. Yet, to date, science has found no evidence that cutting socks actually enhances performance.

This phenomenon involves biomechanics: during sprinting or sudden changes in direction, the largest calf muscles contract and thicken to propel the body forward. This shape change happens thousands of times in one match. For some players, this repeated expansion is enough to make them feel the pressure of tight socks continuously squeezing their calves.
Over time, cutting holes in socks has become an almost instinctive explanation among players — slicing the fabric to allow muscles to "breathe" more easily, which helps relieve pressure and reduce pain or cramping.
However, sports medicine and rehabilitation experts point out that no studies have proven that cutting holes in socks actually provides benefits. On the contrary, most research on compression garments shows that when properly designed and fitted, such clothing can even help limit muscle inflammation after intense exertion.
Despite the lack of physiological evidence, this practice remains widespread among professional footballers. If a player believes a piece of clothing is too tight, removing that perceived discomfort might make them feel freer when running, accelerating, or changing direction — even if their actual performance does not change.
Although there is no evidence that cutting socks provides a competitive advantage or lowers injury risk, the discomfort players feel is not imaginary.
